"Fixing disk optimization items" takes forever

Whenever I do a "clean & optimize" scan it all goes fine until it starts fixing disk optimization items -- once it starts doing this and hits 41/42% it takes forever, I mean it will literally take hours and hours if I let it. Just getting from 42% to 43% takes forever. Can you please help? Thanks.
