*You might be required to remove, updated, or alter some settings. If you do not wish to do so, as you are satisfied with your setup, then just keep your setup as is. This is all based on MY opinion, and should not be judged in any way."

This should be done on a clean PC.

First things first. Update your computer. One simple way to keep your security checked. Update all the drivers, just make sure everything is new.

Threatfire:(Behavior blocker)

This is the hard part...you have to go to advance and make custom rules. In the process list, trust all security apps you use. ALL. As for the descriptions, ill leave those up to you to word it how you wish. What it effects are in ( )

Enable all the rules already there, and add the following:(copied, and pasted from Threatfire)

Hi there, vman,

You certainly appear to be well protected.

I also use SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, ASC 3, of course, and ComodoBoClean. As well I use SpywareBlaster and Windows Defender, although I have to manually update WD now. I use the Windows Firewall too. My cleaners are: CCleaner, RegSeeker and Glary Registry Repair.

I have been using Avast for ages. Do you really advise switching to Avira?

The excellent free imaging tool I use is Macrium Reflect. Very configurable and it can create a plug-in for the BartPE disc.

My biggest sin, I suppose, is using IE7 and IE7Pro.

Think of it this way, Avira has two scanning engines i believe. One is Avast's so I guess it doesn't make it all too bad. Instead of using BOClean, I'd go for something like Threatfire. It has a free version, and if configured properly its really good. Another alternative is Mamutu. It has a free version, and is really good.

But in all honesty, switch IE. Most of the common exploits and such are IE's.Firefox can easily cancel out most of them. With the addon's, (WOT and Script blocker) it makes it even harder to get infected.

FIREFOX USERS!

Use this as a quick and easy way to speed up firefox.

1) Open browser

2) In the address bar type in "about:config" without quotes

3)Promise Firefox you'll be careful (new version)

4) In the filter bar type in pipeline

5) Change these to options to TRUE:

network.http.pipelining

network.http.proxy.pipelining

6) Change this "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" into a number like 15

Basically it increases the connections

7) Clear the filter, click on the screen, Select New -> Integer-> nglayout.initialpaint.delay

as the name and 0 for the value.

This puts delays to zero.

You should notice a big difference now...enjoy :)

Just installed Firefox and I must admit it loads and performs much faster than IE7. Mind you, my IE7/IE7Pro is probably bogged down with all the add ons it's got.

I did the pipeline mods in Firefox that vman suggested and installed the script blocker add-on, however, the WOT add-on won't install as it's bringing up a -228 Error.

What add ons (Tool-bars etc ) does everyone recommend for Firefox, preferably ones that won't slow things down too much?

welcome firefox user!

Hi Ted-to get you started, take a look here for some tricks, and then go here for some of the popular add-ons.I recommend the adblock-and the Fox has a whole section which no doubt you've discovered and been installing from all night-PM me for a little jaw wag on FF if you'd like-still looking for one more goody I misplaced-get back to you on that one-enjoy :!::!: ps-join Mozillazine(forum for FF)Edit: late entry-for a little tweak on Vman's tweak, go here (video format)but then, do not use Firefoxe TCP Optimizer inASC,as values will reset. And,YES to Avira free!!

Hi, detailer,

Many thanks for all that information.

As I don't do a lot of Internet surfing, I really only want a basic, fast, safe and secure FireFox setup that's not bogged down with add ons like I had with IE7.

I've installed the script blocker add-on that vman suggested, but what else do I really need?

I notice that FireFox initially takes about fifteen seconds to fire up my NZCity Home Page, but after that it only needs about five seconds.

Unfortunately, I did use the TCP Optimizer in ASC 3 before I read your post.

I personally do not like Site advisor. I prefer WOT over it. The new versions of site adviser, from what i heard is getting worse and worse. Stick with WOT (web of trust). Tell me your current setup and ill tell you what else to add/remove.

Hi, vman,

Thank you for your comments.

FireFox is giving me a -228 Error whenever I try to install WOT.

I have installed the add blocker and applied the "about:config" fix you suggested.

I have XP Home SP3 and all the security tools I use are listed in a previous post in this thread. What other setup details will help you?

Hi, vman,

Thank you for your help.

I did the about:config again and xpinstall.enabled was set to True.

WOT has now installed okay.

Incidentally, when I type "Pipeline" into the Filter box, the page just goes blank. When I type a required file into the Filter box the page goes blank also. I had to find those files to modify you mentioned by scrolling the list.

Should those two add ons provide adequate protection?

I will remove Windows Defender as it's a damned nuisance having to manually update it now.

Yea, Windows Defender has become annoying. But, other then that, your Firefox is pretty much well off. There is no need to horde your system or firefox with add on's and such to protect your system. With WOT and some common sense, you should be set. :)

well done

Hi Vman-Thank you for the time you invested in that comprehensive list of utilities and a very nice presentation-Well Done! There are some great recommendations in there(at least from my experience)I consider myself an "old hand" at security, because I've pretty much tried them all. That said,I can't impress enough that security applications need due consideration through user evaluation as they are only as effective as the individual users internet proclivities. That is to say that there are nasties out there everywhere but they don't all live in the same place and can't all be beaten down with the same stick.Or,show me your virus vault, and I'll show you mine.Case in point:My ten year old daughter's PC is equipped with a totally different security suite than mine-after half a days surfing on her PC,I'll perform a clean up of a dozen or more nasties, whereby she can surf for days almost trouble free, and vice verse regarding my PC. My advice is to try as many as possible(within reason)see which ones detect what, and from where, decide which are effective, and just as importantly, which ones "play nicely"together(Avira free is best here)It may take weeks or months to find the combination suited to your needs,(and combination is key to effectiveness)but well worth the time invested.I won't bore our readers with my extensive list of "experimentals",but will agree that Avira is by far the best of the "free".I personally run it along side the paid version of Webroot's AV/AS and Firewall. This combination(for me)is light, fast, and very effective for my little corner of the internet.I would like to point out that Webroot's firewall is now freeware, and though it's process manager is a little overbearing at first,a tunable 3 to 7 day training period serves to bring down those annoying flags quickly, and for me has proven to be tuff as nails.I agree completely on SAS and MWB,as I keep both of those as "break-out"scanners-they are very effective. Thanks again for the great info, and thank you readers for enduring my rather lengthy take on security applications in general ;-)

It is true that every user has his/her own security setup that works for them. But personally, this list is for those people who DO NOT have any security setup what so ever. I believe if one (like many users) are going to download a free antivirus, most of the time they'll end up getting something more then they bargained for. Downloading a rouge and such...my advice is to be taken with understanding that these are NOT the only ones. There are many "greats" out there, i am no one to say YOUR pc must have this. I can only share my experiences. Avira is the best antivirus hands down...no argument there but SAS and MBAM are the only BIG ones that are easy to use and are effective. But in any case, no software can beat common sense. Why not share a little?
