Smart Defrag does not defrag all my files . . .

I'm using Smart Defrag 1.0 and when I optimize and defrag I find the result is this application does not defrag all my files.

What gives ?

I'm working with some rather large video files, some over 1 gigabyte in size, so I am having to defrag every day sometimes.

I saved a screenshot of the result after it finished:

It's not system files that are not defraged either . . . .

I downloaded and ran this boot defrag program (owned by a microsoft subsidiary) so as to defrag the pagefile and system files which cannot be defraged while windows is running - - - however, there is no change in the files still not defraged by Smart Defrag as per screenshot.

Hi sunny and sambac

As far as i know there should be a way to defragment the pagefile using just Windows.

Right click My computer, choose performance, choose the tap advanced, in the next window choose the tap advanced again, choose to run without a pagefile for the time being.

Restart , defragment your disk, restart, reset the settings of the pagefile to let Window choose the settings, click ok. And I think this is it.

How many fragments do your pagefile have before and after this operation?

I am not quite sure it works, but I seem to remember to having tried this procedure many years ago, with good effect.

Isn't this a valid procedure, enoskype?

I haven't tried it myself now, because I only have 1 fragment in my page file at this point, so my findings wouldn't tell us much.

Cheers

solbjerg

I have set my pagefile to defrag on each boot up, as mentioned above as normal defrags do not touch it.

Looks like Smart Defrag ain't the ticket

I just optimized my hard disk with Smart Defrag and then ran analyze again and found the framentation percentage had not changed hardly at all - - -

plus, the 2 video files I REALLY needed to get defragged had not been touched.

None of these are system files either.

Looks I need to look elsewhere for a more professional solution . . . .

Hi sambac

You really have a filled up harddisk - around 10% free space only.

Can you move those large video files to another disk?

The usual free space requirement for Windows defragmentation is 15%.

Do you use the setting of not defragging very large files (1 GB)?

Please remember that running processes and programs do not get defragged.

Cheers

Hi guys, sorry for a late reply. I was away for a while.

solbjerg,

Yes it is a valid procedure, but it is better to define the size of the Pagefile as 1.5-2 times the size of RAM instead of let Windows to decide. Make Max. and Min. as same, not to let it fragment in future.

Sunny,

If I remember correctly, we have discussed the defragging of Pagefile at every boot in this post and #4 post of the same thread, and ClearD989 was happy not to defrag at every boot, but defrag at boot from time to time when defragmentation of Page file occurs. Anyway, it is a personal choice.

Sambac,

All of solbjerg's and sunny staines' arguments are valid.

Thanks for the screenshots, but before going somewhere else, please post the resized Result page as a larger image , and if possible post a screnshot of the GUI of Smart Defrag after defragmentation.

I would strongly recommend to read the posts in Think about Defragmentation!!! , I am sure you are going to find a solution there.

Alternative ways of defragmentations are discussed there. (even forcing defragmentation under minimum free space, etc.)

After making sure that you have enough free space, try to use Contig and/or Power Defragmenter to defrag your very large files (have a look at here .)

I hope this helps.

Cheers.
