Undo Optimization?

Running SD v2.3 under Win7. I tried the "Defrag and Fully Optimize" option for the first time and now one of my installed games doesn't load properly. Not sure but suspect SD may have compressed files that the game now can't read. Can I undo the compression?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Matt_T

Welcome. SD does not compress files. When it optimises it moves files to optimum position on the disc. In other words it moves the files you use most often to the fastest access area of the disc. Try a system recover to a time before you ran the optimise and see if your game works normally again.

Hi Matt

As Scannan says - it is very unlikely that a mere defragmentation and subsequent optimizing of placement should cause any malfunction.

We can only give you an adumbrate description of SmartDefrag, if you need more detail you should read some technical articles concerning defragmentation and placement.

There is one thread in the forum that discusses defragmentation in some detail - enoskype's thread Thinking about Defragmentation (link in my signature)

Every time the computer looks for some information and finds it it will drop the information back unto the disk in a place where the reading head happen to find room for it when it has no further need for it at the time..

This will after a while create a large number of fragments on the disk.

It is these fragments that are being defragged by placing them again in the same context from which they came.

The optimizing of placement is to move the data from the programs that you use most often to the fastest region of the disks namely close to the outer rim.

Therefore I think that the most likely culprit in your case is either the use of one of the free programs from IObit fx. ASC or the Malwarebyte program you are using - depending upon the settings you have chosen - it may even be your antivirus that has found a part in the computers applications that it views as suspicious.

Take a look at what has been quarantined in these programs to see if there is anything there that it might be.

I do not know Windows 7 or 8 but I suspect that they are even more resistant to change that Win XP, this could also possibly have something to do with it.

A check disk may be good.

p.s. You may try Windows key+ Pause/Break to get to System properties - there hit the tab advanced and then select

the button setting under Performance. In that window try selecting "Let Windows choose the best settings for your computer"

See if that helps. Then give some feedback please. (before you run any clean up) :-)

Hi Matt_T,

SD 2.3 is quite an older version of Smart Defrag, the most recent version is Smart Defrag 2.6, so please use the most recent versions of IObit products.

Cheers.
