Hi,

I just joined this forum. I also just upgraded memory in my daughter's computer (one I'm on right now). So, she has 2 Gig now (maximum for this PC). There are several problems that she is experiencing, but instead of listing them, I want to just make sure there isn't something else going on.

Could someone take a look at the below report and tell me if anything looks flaky? I see that some drivers aren't loading, but I have no idea what they are or how to shut them off. I doubt we need them.

Mostly, ASC has made this computer usable (along with the new memory). So, first things first ---- can someone check this report below (generated from IObit Explorer) and let me know if anything looks outrageously bad?

I have some PC experience, not too foreign as an end-user, but not a hardware maintenance person (I used to be a software programmer before becoming a Mom).

Thanks!! :-)

Hi macadi63.. good job on the memory install!

Mostly looks good. :-D

Please download and run JavaRa removing the older versions. Then install the newest version.

There are remnants of toolbars running... record any important passwords and user ID's and run TFC by Old Timer. (note that this is a live link to the software...click on TFC, download it, save it, and run it... it will probably ask you to reboot... o.k)

Please also open the start menu and copy/paste this command there: sfc /scannow

Then run the systemfilechecker.

Let us know how the system is then... bet its better.

Sincerely,

-Mel

Hi,

Thanks! Putting in new memory is like popping in toast -- no problem there. Just don't ask me to install a new fan or anything! ;)

Did JavaRa, TFC by Old Timer. Could not complete scannow because a friend (who moved) has the disks, oops. Can get copies from Dell, I think, for $11 or something.

What is systemfilechecker? The report I ran in the first place and posted?

Will check back in morning CST.

Thanks, Margaret

Hi Margaret:grin:,

You should be good to go... systemfilechecker (SFC) the system command from my ealier post

sfc /scannow
is a built in utility of Windows that checks the integrity of the Windows system files.

It may ask for the install medium (discs) if the reserve files are corrupt. Did SFC ask for your install medium/rescue disc???:?:

Could not complete scannow because a friend (who moved) has the disks, oops.

Sincerely,

-Mel

Yep, many times. I had to keep canceling out of each screen and hoped it would proceed. It did, seemingly, but I got tired of hitting the cancel button and exited the entire process at some point. Should I have tried to let it do it's thing even tho' no disks here?

Posted

Hi macadi,

Since you are using XP sp3, the route for SFC /scannow could be defined in the registry for Serive Pack 3 in Windows root directory.

I am not on XP now, but soon I can give you the needed registry address for changing, so you can do it without installer disk, but if you have the disk for XP sp3, then it is easier to use the installation disk.

Cheers.

I dunno. I hunted around the web and it looks like it's difficult to get around this. I do not have the disks and won't be able to get to them. If you think it might work though, I can give it a try.

Updated report looks pretty good, though! What do you think?

Hi macadi63,

Please tell me the existing data values for below regisrys in your PC first before doing anything. (Screenshots could be better.)

After confirmation, you can try to use sfc /scannow without installaton CD if you edit the below Registry Datas as: C:\windows\ServicePackFiles

1)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Setup\SourcePath (REG_SZ)

2)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath (REG_SZ)

Check the below if the data value in your case is C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles same @:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\Setup\ServicePackSourcePath

NOTE: Please export the existing registries to a safe location of your PC to replace them back if there is a problem.

Cheers.

have a look at this

hi maca,

vent Type: Error

Event Source: MRxSmb

Event Category: None

Event ID: 8003

Date: 5/8/2007

Time: 10:05:16 PM

User: N/A

Computer: [sERVER]

Description:

The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer [computer] that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{#######-####-####-#. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

It took quite a while to find a solution, and even those were buried in forums or other posts. So I decided I would post the things that I believe can help. Here are some steps you can follow (no guarantee that they will work, but it worked for me and for others based on the various things that I read).

Look at the System Event log on your Server and look for the Error 8003 (like the one listed above). Within that log, identify the “computer” that is announcing itself as a master browser.

Go on to the computer identified in step 1 and go to the Services Administration panel. You can usually find this by going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

Once you have Services open, look for an entry called “Computer Browser”. If that Service is “started,” you have found your culprit. If not, you may have to try the registry hack listed in step 6 a few steps

Double click on the “Computer Browser” service to edit it. STOP the service and then change the type to Disabled (from either Manual or Automatic). Click OK to apply your changes.

That should have resolved the issue. You should check your main servers event logs periodically to be sure that the error doesn’t show up. If it continues to show…

…you have to check the registry value on the computer. You do this by launching your registry editor and going to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\IsDomainMaster

and ensure that it is set to FALSE. If it isn’t, you can change it to FALSE. Caution: registry edits are dangerous so only do this if you are sure you know what you are doing and the previous fix didn’t work. You probably have to reboot the machine to make the change take place.

I have also read that you need to be sure that all of your computers should be on the same subnet. If the above doesn’t work, be sure to check that.

long time since XP PRO, but stiil got the disc, but another thought, this is a home pc? who set up the domain!, change the workgroup.
