Lost and Confused Computer Noob

Recommended Posts

Ok, so here goes, I have tried everything I can think of to try to correct my issues but to no avail. Feeling really useless right about now, but found this game booster that offers diagnosis. I thought I was in luck, but I do not understand anything this says. Aside from what this tells you, here is the problem I am having.

I play Runescape (laugh if you must, but please continue reading) through the desktop game client. Previously I have had no problems, but since recent updates, I think maybe my computer can no longer handle it. The program can only be opened in safe mode, otherwise it crashes. If I try to run it in opengl, directx, or on my software, it crashes. GameBooster had no effect, which surprised me because I had assumed that it would redirect the directx and java capabilites to the game. No such luck, and I am still crashing.

I guess this is my final attempt to try to figure out what is wrong with my computer and if that means I have to wait and hope some kind of computer savy person kind enough to translate will respond then I will wait around and continue hoping for the time being. Thank you for even reading this far, and I hope you can help.

P.S. From what I gather, I may be wrong, but I think something is up with 'atapi' though I am not entirely sure what that is. Yes all my drivers are current and yes I do have new Java with updates and all Directx updates for my supported version.

Hi UserError,

Your Window's appears to be damaged. "atapi" is only a device managemant software.

Please open your command prompt and copy/Paste this instruction and execute it... sfc /scannow I think in Win 7 all you have to do is go to the Start menu to do this... paste the command in what you think of as the "search" box and it should run. ( I am running Vista so I cannot be sure).

This command will run the systen file checker (SFC) and reference the cached system files, replacing the missing or damaged ones.

If my advisement is incorrect concerning how to run SFC on Win. 7... be patient... another will come along and post with the correction,

Sincerely,

-Mel

Live long and prosper!

scregset

Hi Usererror,

The scregset error (AVG self defense Module) is caused by an application trying to change AVG registry entries.

presumably in this case Java, which has not been updated it tried to .

Check your avg logs.

it might be that Java has been

a) disabled by another program, some now do this automatically if it has not been used for sometime, AVG or even your browser

If i were you i would remove and reinstall java, with avg enabled if this fails then dissable AVG and try again >MAKE SURE YOUR OFFLINE WHILST you reinstall with AVG dissabled.

If this works i would also suggest you run a preboot scan to be on the safe side.

Roy

Just popped over to the AVG forum they appear to experiencing problems with thier last few updates, not allowing programmes to download.

[EDIT] by Melvin_deal: This tool is especially useful for upgrading your java. Thanks Roy.
