Problems After Installing ASC 6 Update and Smart Defrag

I spent the last 4 days thinking I had a virus.

I was unable to run things from Windows 8 start screen and nothing would happen when I right clicking the desktop.

Even after restored a disk image I created a week ago my system started to act up again.

I then did a clean in stall of Windows 8 and everything ran like a champ.

I starting writing down every windows update and ever program install to find the culprit.

Well I found it was an update to ASC 6 and Smart Defrag. The moment I installed them my system went to hell.

I can't run Explorer to view files. OI get no error messages, nothing happens.

It doesn't seem to be as bad this time but something isn't right.

Disk Doctor found no errors.

First is there any type of recovery in ASC 6 to undo the update?

I uninstalled Smart Defrag and all seems well now.

I was unable to do anything at all for about 5 minutes after my Start Screen appears.

Computer wouldn't run and as right click on the desktop nothing would happen.

Also when I ran Task Manager it would Stop Responding.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Hi James

It sounds like it could be that the the Boot Time defrag was doing what is was set to do according to the settings chosen?

Problem is I never get a chance to check. I'm unable to do anything for 15 or 20 minutes after installing it or after starting my system.

I there a way to turn Boot Time Defrag off before my system gets locked up like it does?

Hi James

Have you taken a look in your config.ini file located by me (XP) in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\IObit\Smart Defrag 2 to determine what the settings are for your Boot Time defrag?

Mine shows among others these settings:

EnableBoottime=0

BoottimeDefragVolumes=

p.s. If it is the defragmentation option in ASC 6.3 Pro try to untick the use of Activating the Defragmentation.

If you cannot start normally try a safe boot up (safe mode)

What are your settings in ASC?

I understand your last post now.

Problem is when I install Smart Defrag I'm unable to do anything. How can I check the config.ini in I'm don't install it?

Why would Smart Defrag, by default, have the Boot Time defrag option set to yes knowing what problems it might cause??

Also, I'm a bit gun-shy now to install Smart Defrag at all. It did nothing but cause Windows Explorer to stop responding.

Hi James

Do you have leftovers from previous installs on your computer?

If so try cleaning them away with IObit Uninstaller or Revo Uninstaller.

How much free space is left on your harddisk?

Is the program allowed by your security setup?

This is a clean install of Windows 8. Or at least it was. Who knows what problems there are now.

My security is allowing installation.

I have a 1 TB hdd and I'm using 23%.

Hi James

There then must be some leftovers that makes trouble when you install 2.8

A truly clean install may then be tried if you want to use the newest version.

My 2.8 gives no problems (my OS-XP)

By now you are then able to see what settings you have in SD :-)

Good luck!

I installed Smart Defrag 2.7 and there are no problems.

Something is up with 2.8

I did a clean install once and I had problems.

The first time I did a clean install of windows 8. Once eIm installed ASC it prompted me to install Smart Defrag.

Which I did. And I'm all too aware of the results

I'd rather not.

I used ASC uninstaller to uninstall 2.7. Reinstalled 2.8 and the same thing happened.

Must ask you, are you using Smart Defrag on a Windows 8 system??

Hi James

I am sorry - no I am not. I mentioned previously that I use XP myself.

Sounds like a strange problem that should be looked at by Iobit programmers.

I've already started a ticket with IObit support.

At least version 2.7 is working properly.

Thanks much for your assistance,

James
