ASC turned off.

Recommended Posts

Upgraded from ASCPRO to Ultimate and all was fine for a day. Yesterday Ultimate simply got turned off, as indicated in the system tray, and I could not access it in any way for 2 or 3 hours and then it turned on again.

Today it is again off and inaccessible.

I do have a trial version of NOD32 antivirus installed. I thought I had deleted it but it won't delete so I'm waiting until the trial expires and they inactivate it.

I do wonder if the NOD32 is messing with ASC Ultimate or is this a bug that others have had.

Using Chrome & XP.

2 antivirus

Hi Ron,

All forums say not to run 2 A/V's as they are always competing against each other.

download another copy of ASCU.

download Eset removal programme,(if it exists)

>> Go off line

remove both ESET and ASCU completely, including all files/folders.

Reinstall ASCU.

Hopefully that should do the trick.

Roy

see your running XP suggest you get a free firewall programme

ASC turned off.

Eset has to be uninstalled in safe mode and has warnings about serious damage possible.

Even the clean/install for ASC looks pretty awesome for me.

I guess I will just float along until the NOD32 trial expires and see what happens.

Will take the PC to a repair shop and let somebody else do it. Better that than me crashing the thing.

Thank you,

RonT

that does not look user friendly

Hi Ron,

looks nasty,

couple of suggestions,

If you want to try it.

FIRST BACK-UP any of you user data.

use the Eset uninstaller EXACTLY as they say or

Use system restore to a point B4 you installed Eset,(not preferred).

I would only use a shop as a last resort as i suspect they will do a clean

install of XP, you would also need to back up your personal data before hand.

Roy, I don't even know what or how to back up my data.

The shop I use does save everything before doing repairs. I have complete faith in him.

I figure better to take the PC in before rather than after.

Maybe.

Hi RonT and scrd01,

Is everything fine now? And, scrd01, millions of thanks for your warmhearted help.

RonT, it is suggested to Eset uninstaller to uninstall your NOD32 antivirus completely, if you want to run ASC Ultimate with the real time protection on.

Because, you can not turn on the real time protection of 2 AV softwares together.

Thank you for supporting IObit!

  • 3 weeks later...

ASCU started working just fine for a couple of weeks and then today when I booted it will not give me access.

With the cursor put on the systray icon it says that "Advanced System Care Ultimate Real-Time Protection: On"

But I cannot open it.

I rebooted 4 or 5 times. The floating CPU indicator, upper right, gets stuck on 6% or 19% or something and putting the cursor on the little arrow, instead of pointing, it shows the hourglass and no response to clicking.

I can't tell if I do in fact have protection or not.

I am about ready to take it to the shop and have it and ESET removed and forget about both of them.

ESET NOD32 is not activated BTW and I wouldn't think it is part of the problem but who knows.

Stop gapped.

Also when I clicked on restart or turn-off there would be a 1 to 2 minute delay before it would respond so the CPU was being hogged by some ASC function(s).

So as I said clicking on the systray icon would not open ASC but I found that I could open "Quick Settings" which I did.

I turned off everything but the two Security settings (Full Detection & Surfing Protection) and the two "Clean" settings and the "Automatic Update".

I then restarted and was able to then open ASC.

Real-Time Protection

Windows Firewall

Auto Silent Mode

Are ON.

It appears that the vital functions are there. I can do without the Performance and Automatic stuff except for Update.

I can Right click the systray icon and open the performance monitor to do a performance scan.

Hi Ron,

midnight here in sunny England,

so i will have a better look tomorrow.

But

Please update to service pack 3.

both AV's are still running

Kingsoft is an MS Office type suite

event error Mpfilter is a remnant of an earlier MS security programme.

Hi Ron,

in your post yesterday? 13:39,

you stated Nod32 not activated, services clearly show it is

could you

ASCU>Toolbox>startmanager>services(brings up windows files)

scroll down to Eset. Right click, open properties select dissable, you may have to stop it 1st, option also available on this dropdown menu.

I also see your running the standard MS XP firewall its not that great and most good forums will advise you install another, free ones are available.

you did not answer my question about restore points

do you have 1 prior to eset installation

Disabled ESET

Good afternoon Roy,

The 'stop' option was not available so I did disable ESET. Thanks.

Is it possible that ESET's original download gave me a 'trial' plus a full version?

I did a standard uninstall that maybe uninstalled the 'trial' but the full version remains with the admonishment that it is not activated and I should use the trial version.

So yes in that case I did have a prior. Sorry I missed that question.

My PC tech guy that has been in the business a long long time does not like SP3. Why would I really need it please?

I'll do a restart & send you another sysexplorer.

I'll check out firewalls.

Looks like you might have a few rain showers tomorrow.

Ron

Okay I just got the answer to SP3:

next April when Microsoft drops security updates for Windows XP or now if you haven’t installed Service Pack 3.

Firewall

Should I eliminate Windows firewall before installing another?

Thanks,

Ron

Again I answered my own question.

Tool box-System Control and turned off Windows Firewall.

I am beginning to really like ASC.

Thanks,

Windows-firewall is great and should not be removed

but it is Not Malware or Virus protection software.

Windows 'Security-essentials', that comes with Windows-7 and 8,

is very good Malware & virus protection though.

ASC is to be used in addition to those Windows security programs, for system maintenance.

firewall/eset

Toppack,

ron's using XP SP2 firewall,

Ron usually goto majorgeeks for downloads search it for firewalls, but only use the firewall, most come with an AV.

and ESET is no longer running, id leave it alone now till the end off the trial.

SP3 is also about security and as you said soon not to be supported.

It may also remove some off the other events

Maybe!

Well I did disable windows firewall and installed Privatefirewall

http://www.privacyware.com/personal_firewall.html

Then as soon as I tried to do anything at all I would get a popup error:

ESETNOD32 Antivirus ERROR- about (lost) communications with Kernal.

Well that would freeze the system and cause the firewall to close.

I finally went back and Enabled NOD32 and now it seems to be all working.

Sorry for all of the extra confusion.

Still have not turned on all of the automatic ASC functions.

Smartasses!

I guess you are referring to the firewall that does not require a lot of user control?

As a matter of fact my car is a 1980 Subaru hatchback.

Little cabin in the desert. No garage so one would have to be pretty stupid to park a new car in the blowing sand unless, maybe like you, they would enjoy wrapping it up and tying it down every night.

BTW it has been paid for for quite a while now.

How do you like taking the bus anyhow?

Smartasses again!

On second thought you could have been referring to my not having turned on all of the ASC automatic features?

If you had been reading and paying attention I had to turn them off to get ASC ULTIMATE to stop malfunctioning. I'll turn them on again when I feel like gambling.

It would help if you clarified your (witty?) remarks.

oh i hate smartasses

Hi Ron,

this is getting complicated.

I take it you turned your PC off/on.

if so this may have re-enabled Eset, as i dont use it my guess is that it did,

AND maybe it also has a Firewall, hence the kernal problem.

NB

I have no real knowledge of firewall control:roll: i just let mine do its thing, and i've not seen/found a REALLY good article about them, yes OK i know it blocks ports, but there is no definative list, as most programmes tend to latch onto the major MS ports, not really helpfull to block one of them.

Maybe in the other programmes secrion of the forum someone could do the honours:idea:

As for checking/using all the different functions within ASCU, that will depend on your own user requirements, i have actually turned off some standard elements within it to suite my own needs, it took a little while but I wanted to do my way.

Based on what you've said i suspect that everytime you turn your comp off/on eset will re-enable itself, (self protection mode), a vicious circle all i can suggest at this point is wait till the trial ends and then follow its uninstall proceedures then re-install your new found firewall.

apologies Ron multiple AV's = trouble.

Roy
