Don't switch to v3 if you are under XP! CPU Too slow.

Hello,

Like joe, see thread http://forums.iobit.com/showthread.php?t=16420

I have installed Smart Defrag v3 and since then, my computer has been working slow... process was long, defrag was taking a lot of CPU, ... my computer was so slow I had to terminate Smart Defrag to work in normal conditions.

So I had lost the benefits of a fast program working in the background.

So my advices:

1°) To users under XP, before trying SD v3 under XP, keep a copy of the SD v2 install if you really want to try.

2°) To Smart Defrag team, please offer the possibility to download SD v2 alternatively. It was impossible to find a website that offers an older version (the 2.9 version of September) to download. I am glad, i didn't erase the setup file on my computer.

3°) I won't switch to V3 until it is stable. So the reminder to update to v3 each time the program is ran, is a bit annonying.

Other XP users, give your feedback.

By the way, the process to register to this forum is a bit long. You must active account and then wait for approval. I can't say it helps to give feedback on this forum.

Yes, I've also seen problems on XP, and Windows 7 as well. Partially solved on XP by changing the process affinity to just one processor so that the other core is free to do the normal PC tasks.

It seems that instead of a small defrag every 3 hours or so with V2, the new V3 waits until maybe 24 hours (approx) and then does a massive defrag, consuming a lot of CPU and creating a lot of disk activity. Will this reduce, perhaps, after a number of runs?

I was disappointed after the promises of greater efficiency and lower resource use in V3, but it does use a lot less less memory.

Hi SDboy59 and David Taylor ,

Thanks for your reply.

When you see "Smart defrag was taking a lot of CPU", do you defragment several disks at the same time?

Could you please send us the related screenshots?

Guide for taking screenshot.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for your response.

To clarify, this is automatic defragmentation, but on four partitions on two physical drives. If it were possible to set these to run sequentially rather than in parallel that might be better, but I don't see an option to set that. The only screen-shot in this case is one CPU showing 100% while the defrag is running.

Is it possible to restore the "smaller defrag more often" setting which SmartDefrag 2 used, or something nearer to that? Perhaps the setting "don't defrag if only 1% defragmentation is causing the reduced frequency of defrags, but of course, that may actually be a wise choice!

Thanks, David

DumbDefrag PRO 3 Slows XP Way Down!

I have 2 computers with "Smart"DefragPRO 3 on them.

The one running Windows XP is much slower with SD3 running. When I open SD3, it takes several minutes just to get it to switch tabs. I want to go back to SD2 until IObit gets SD3 fixed. May I do so, please?

On the computer with Windows 7 on it SD3 has a different issue. If I set it to "Defrag and Prioritze" it no longer reads the disks correctly, and the computer boot time takes about 5x longer. The other Defrag settings work as expected, so I can stick with them until IObit fixes "Smart"Defrag 3.

Is there any ETA on when these fixes will be coming out?

Does SD3 actually do anything?

Slow and ineffective

Hopefully the following screen-shots are self-explanatory.

Hi Edward27821,

Please show us all your settings of SD3.

I wouldn't expect anything different with 39.5 GB sized single file with 36486 fragments on a 138.7 GB disk with 75.1GB used space.

More than half of your used space is occupied with 1 file with 36486 fragments.

Probably you should do the file defragmentation only for that file first.

What is the size of the files you skip for defragmentation? Is the checkbox there in settings ticked?

Cheers.

Settings : screen-shots

Thank you for telling me that I have a massive file that is fragmented. I'll try to locate and possibly delete it.

Found the file. it was a log-file. The application that created it had a setting for the log. I set it to limit file at 10 meg. WOW! what a difference!

Enos, you're awesome. Thank you!

Hi Edward,

I am glad that the problem is pin pointed. :-D

So, that file is in use when Windows is running and SD3 can not defragment it, as the access is denied to that file, and boot time defrag of SD3 is only for system files.

Did you try defragmenting that single file when the concerned program is closed?

Your settings is OK, but I wouldn't Boot Defrag every 2 days. Once in 2-4 weeks is quite adequate, IMO.

FYI, SystemExplorerService.log file in your PC (Most probably created by the same software creating SystemExplorer.log file) seems to grow fast and has tendency to fragment rapidly, so if there is an adjustment for that, it may be wise to look at that file too.

BTW, it will be nice to see a new screenshot of SD3 Pro for your defragmented system drive after limiting the size of SystemExplorer.log file.

Cheers.

Half+ of HD now free space

Hey Enos,

No, I didn't bother to defrag the file.

SystemExplorer (a task manager) has a setting to limit the size of its service log file. I've set it to 10 megs.

I changed the boot time to 21 days. Thanks for your opinion.

Attaching screenshot.

SD defrags sequentionally as standard. If you select more than one drive, it defrags each drive in turn. I actually cannot see how numerous drives could be defragged in parallel, unless you ran a seperate program for each drive.

Also, it is not recommende to defrag SSD's/flash drives, as it seriously reduces the lifespan of the drive. If you look throught the SD forum you will find many discussion regarding this.

Thanks, it wasn't clear and there seemed to be a suggestion that the high CPU load might have been to do with parallel operation. I only have one instance of SD3, and couldn't see an option.

100% agree with your comments on SSD drives!

  • 2 weeks later...

Wrote program to limit SmartDefrag to one CPU

I got fed of of waiting for a response from IObit, so I wrote program to limit SmartDefrag to one CPU:

http://www.satsignal.eu/software/disk.html#SetAffinity

and you can include a link to that program in your startup folder. At least it stops the crippling effect that SmartDefrag has on boot time!
