Auto Defrag not Autodefraging

Recommended Posts

I installed Smart Defrag 7 days ago and did a defrag and optimize on the drive the next day. I set Autodefrag to run. I understand that it is supposed to defrag when the system is idle for 5 minutes. I checked yesterday and after the analyze function it tell me the last defrag was the first one I did a week ago. It also says that the current suggestion is to defrag and optimize, the percent fragmented is below 1% which appears to be rather low for a new defrag. Do I have to set something that I've missed or does the system autodefrag after a certain % of fragmentation?:?:???::-?

It's a Dell Latitude C840 running XP Pro SP2 up to date as far as I can tell.

Auto Defrag

Hi Waynezat-No,you're not missing anything.Your only option within SD to start the auto feature is system idle time, with the lowest selectable trigger point being one minute. Now,when I look at the version of SD that's built into ASC3 Pro,I have the options of "always defrag"or defrag at "3%","5%" and so on.So,I have to assume that your auto-defrag didn't show you a last date ran since one week ago because fragmentation levels were either to low for it to post a result,or it only posts a result if you initiate a defrag.Assuming that auto-defrag is an ongoing thing, there can't be a "last time run" posted.(please, someone from Admin correct me here if need be).In respect to Iobits recommendations to defrag and optimize, these numbers,in my opinion, are ridiculously low.I've seen the green light for 0.17%.This makes no sense at all. There can't possibly be any noticeable gain at a number this low. When you see a 2 or a 3 ahead of the decimal point, maybe. My advice, forget the auto junk(it's a waste of resources and memory)and run the analyze feature depending on the way you use your PC,and more importantly, how many programs you install/uninstall.After you do this a few times, you'll find the number where you see lag or a performance problem-that's when you run the utility. The average user probably needs D&O once a month(more or less)Happy Holidays

Hi Wayne

By me if I open SD - then if I hover over the icon in the systray - it will tell me that I have never autodefragged. This is true by me - as I do not use the automated defrag.

Cheers

Thanks, that's how I see it. I don't see any need to defrag a drive with less then 1% fragmentation, it's just that the system made that suggestion and I wanted to see if I was off track.
