Windows Installer box pops up!

Recommended Posts

Hi nana

You have probably enabled automatic update somewhere, and it wants to update something. If it is something you want - then let it do the update, otherwise take away the setting for that application's automatic update.

That my guess at least :-)

Cheers

I can't take it anymore.

The little Windows Installer box appears every time I start up and when I go to certain sites.

I have tried my best to read up on what to do.....

I will go have a good cry.

Windows Installer box pops up....sniff sniff

Thank you for your input. I don't know what to do. I have gotten all updates, defragged the files the other day, ran a Norton security scan.....

What I read about this is that sometimes a lot of things have been installed and uninstalled, etc...I tried restoring the computer to a past date and everything seems to run swimmingly.....except for this pesky box.

I'm still going to go have a good cry now.

Could you send us a screenshot?

windows installer

It just says "preparing to install".....

That's it. Once I actualy get onto my ome page, it only pops up once in awhile when I check out certain sites. But upon starting up my computer, as soon as I click on my desktop IE icon, the little gray box shows, and I have to wait for about 2 minutes, then my home page opens. I'm just wearing socks, because I don't trust myself right now to be near the screen with shoes on!

I just read a detailed answer to this problem on another site, and the person was instructing the asker to go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/AVG_AntiVi...tion_d886.html and download this free antivirus program, which he describes as better than Norton, then go to the control panel and disable anything there for Norton and Symantec, etc...

I am tempted to follow these instructions; but truthfully, I don't even know who I can trust.

The asker wrote back and said that it had solved his problem, after taking the previous advice that was suggested, which hadn't helped him.

Don't cry nana :-)

Try Windows update, let's see what that says.

Does your computer work ok apart from this?

Do you use an antivirus program?

Please as much information about your problem as you think relevant!

What version of Windows Installer do you have on your computer??

Cheers

I will ck. updates

My computer works well aside from this.

I think I have done something wrong with this computer that my son gave me. I feel like a dunce.

I have Norton Security on it. I will go ck. out updates. But, I have already done that this week. But here I go for now.

Thank you for your time.

I only wish I knew all of the info that's in your head.

But, alas, it was not my calling.....

Went to Windows Update:

On the right side of screen little note says:

"Automatic updates turned ON. Your computer is set to receive security and critical updates automatically."

Still, I clicked on the Express update: "No high-priority updates for your computer are available."

Then went to Custom Updates: Here are the options is suggests:

(may improve performance of your comuter)

Microsoft Windows XP

1. Group policy client side extensions for Wind. XP (KB943729)

2. Root certificates

3. Windows Search 4.0 for Wind. XP (KB940157)

4. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0: x86 (KB829019)

Then:

other choice--

Office Live Add-in

I didn't click on any of these.....

Hi again nana

What Windows version and do you have SP2 ? (Service Program 2) installed? Or perhaps SP3??

You can check that by right clicking My Computer and choose Properties and then read what it says.

By the way - do you have ASC version 1.1.0.2 installed?

Cheers

just a thought

Perhaps nana :-)

Have you tried closing the computer (not restart - but close) sometimes if something is waiting to be installed it will install when you close the computer, It will say that it will install an update or whatever if you follow what it says.

above post

In an above post, I mentioned reading where someone had this same problem; and the person on that site gave the guy step-by-step instructions. Would that work for me? Or would that be chancy to follow directions like that with my computer?

Thanks for trying to help me.

okay

then lets check

follow this link

http://www.majorgeeks.com/AVG_AntiVi...tion_d886.html

this is a free antivirus program / one of the best / better then Norton /

download & save it to your desktop

then disconnect fom the internet / then go to the control panel / select ( administrative tools) then select (services)

now scroll thru the services and disable anything that is there for (norton & symantec) there is quite a few so look closely

too disable a item in services you need to right click on the service / then select (properties) in this window you will see a dropdown bar that say (automatic) select it and the select (disable) then (apply) then select (okay)

now after doing this close all windows

then start / then select (run

then type in ( msconfig

then press enter

now you will want to select ( selective startup) then inthe boxs below select ( load start up items )

then select ( services ) now select the box ( hide all microsoft services ) now scroll thru those services & look for any ( norton or symantec ) services / if any are theremake sure that they are not checked

now select ( apply ) then select ( close ) you will then be aske to restart select (restart )

now your system will reboot / when it starts it will give you the notice that you are running in msconfig mode / check the box in the window and select ( okay / apply )

now go to your control panel and uninstall everything to do with norton & symantec / you may have to reboot 1 or 2 times to completly remove the av program

now start / select (run

type in (msconfig

then enter

then select ( normal start up / then apply / then closes & select restart

then when your system loads install AVG / then reboot & connect to the net & do updates

now does thid issue persist

get back to us

Hi nana

Yes it may be Norton that is the culprit here, but I am not sure.

To get rid of it (uninstall) - can you follow his instructions to the letter?

Norton has a small program that uninstalls the program and leftovers.

Revo Uninstaller is a nice little program that does the same if one chooses the option to clean everything.

At least you could try

If you have a paid version of Norton you could also ask them how to get rid of your problem, - at least copy your username and license number in order to be able to use it again if you so desire.

P.s. You could also try to upgrade your Windows Installer version

p.p.s What startup type do you have in Admin/services for Windows installer?

Restart computer after installation.

I will try

Thank you for looking that over. Yes, I will follow those directions and see if that is a possible solution.

Thanks also for your thoughts.

I was leery of following random instructions because I didn't want to touch anything that I shouldn't.

I am hoping for the best.

Thank you!
