Smart Defrag seems stuck

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently upgraded to the AWC Pro version. After scanning and running fixes it got to the defrag and seems to be perpetually stuck on the defrag and shows it is defragging the file Systemindex.332.gthr

What might be the problem, if any, and does it normally take more than 24 hours for the first time it defrags using the Smart system?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jasen

You will have to provide a bit more information :-)

OS, ASC version?

How large Volume(s)

How fragmented?

How much free space?

What kinds of files are your largest?

Are you familiar with the functioning of the program?

Did you install over the top?

For starters :-) :-)

Cheers

Try this

Hi jason-Are you stuck on Disk Defragment during a Diagnose System scan?If so,stop the operation and close out ASC completely(if it's there, right click on the tray icon and choose exit)Now,launch ASC again and choose Utilities and then click on the Smart Defrag icon.Run the program as "defrag only" until it's conclusion.Next, exit out of SD(from the tray like before with ASC)Now you can run the Diagnose System scan again and see what happens when it gets to Disk Defragment.

Hi,

Thanks for a quick reply guys.

Firstly, I run XP with full service packs. The disk volumes I am managing are 250Gb, 80Gb and an external 500Gb. I have clicked to ignore 1Gb files and over. The AWC Pro version is ver 3.1.2

I had not previously downloaded SmartFrag from IObit. I did have Diskeeper, which I have now unistalled once I realised AWC has a defragger.

Ok, this is happening in AWC's System Diagnose after I have scanned and then go to repair the problems. So when it gets to the defrag bit, the program just sits on defrag and the little arrow blinks endlessly as if it is doing something, never moving from a particular file is says it is defragging...the harddisk LED blinks like something is happening also, but it goes on for hours....over 24. I have since stopped AWC. I went to the SmartFrag icon in Utilities as suggested and the icon took me straight to the website to download smartfrag. I did so and installed it. I am now using that to defrag. It appears to be working and tells me the system will take over 24 hours to defrag (just the c: drive). From the drive map in SmartDefrag, it appears that no "smart defragging" has occurred before I installed this second application suggesting that AWC did indeed hang at that point.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Hi jasen,

Download the trial PerfectDisk10, defrag your system files offline, do a Smart Placement defrag.

Then after, try using SmartDefrag and defragmenter in ASC 3. Follow the suggestions in the Report of SD.

Cheers.

Hi Jasen

You are aware that the timing function in SmartDefrag doesn't work correctly?

Take a look in the thread "Timing isn't everything"

In "defrag only" it seems to work, but not in the other defrag modes.

How long it will take depends on fragmentation level, mass of data, % of free space and how many Volumes you are defragmenting at the same time.

We hear reports that sometimes large picture or video files will make it hang.

If Defrag started running in ASC repair, it means that it minimum is 10% fragmented.
