External Hard Drive

I recently had a problem where as soon as windows loaded, my screen turned black. Took it to a pc shop to sort the problem, was told the hard drive was damaged and needed to be replaced. Once getting it home and turning the system on, windows loaded a black screen. Took it back to the shop where they said a driver update for my graphics card was needed.

Problems fixed now but i put my old hard drive into a external case just to see if it was acually broken. I pluged it in and windows says the device has malfunctioned and it couldn't be reconised....but tried it on my laptop and it passed a HD tune test without a glitch, it runs smooth.

Could the shop make my pc not accept the HD? or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Where would i start troubleshooting to getting this working on my desk top?

Thanks
