Won't minimize to system try on startup, instead user interface box opens

Recommended Posts

I do not want to have to manually minimize the program after each startup of my computer. I want the program to start when the computer starts up, with the user interface not being open and visible and showing on the taskbar, and the program minimized to the system tray.

I have checked in options: 1. minimize to system try when program is closed; 2. load automatically at windows startup; 3. automatically check for updates; 4. enable smart silent technology while defragmenting; 5. stop defrag while using battery.

I note from this forum that others have problems with the program starting but not showing up in the system tray. On my computer I do not have that problem. It always shows up in the system tray, but I want it to startup also MINIMIZED to the system tray so I do not need to manually minimize it to the system tray.

I also note on one of the threads about not showing up in the system tray that there is a registry edit that purports to cause the program to open up in the system tray while preventing the user interface from showing up at startup. While that fix addresses my problem, isn't there a way to do this without editing the registry? I am very inexperienced at registry editing and would prefer not to have to do so. Also, shouldn't the program open up minimized to the system tray as a default opening operation?

I have windows vista home premium on my machine.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi steam

And what updating option have you chosen?

Did you install the current program over the top?

Cheers

I have it set to automatically check for updates. Maybe the fact that it checks for updates upon starting is the reason for not automatically minimizing. Is that correct? Also, this is my first installation of the program.

Thanks!

Hi steam,

Please find the config.ini file of SD in the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\{User Name}\Application Data\IObit\IObit SmartDefrag\config.ini

"Show Hidden files and folders" option in your Folder Options must be turned on to see this file.

Open it with Notepad, copy and paste the content in a post here please.

Cheers.

HI steam

We should hear what happens when you restart Windows with that setting.

Should you have the program starting at Windows startup, it is doing precisely as asked I think?

Cheers

solbjerg

I just set it to not check for updates, then closed it, then reopened the program, but it still does not minimize automatically upon starting.

Thanks steam,

It seems to be OK, but let's try to change the ones shown below:

StopWhenBattary=0

AutoCheckUpdate=1

EnableTrayPrompt=1

LastAutoDefrag=0

EnableSmartDefrag=0

Save the file and and after exiting SD, Restart your PC.

Please type exacty the whole string in:

ASC 3=>Utilities=>Admin Tools=>Startup Manager=>Smart Defrag

Right click on it and choose "Jump To Entry".

See if it is exactly the same string in the Registry Editor.

Check if there is a line in Startup Manager and Registry Editor, which is not like others.

Cheers.

I'm a little confused. You wrote:

Now my comments:

Type the string in where? Right click on what, where?

Thanks!

Here are my new settings:

StopWhenBattary=0

OK steam,

Open Advanced SystemCare 3.2, click "Utilities" circle on the left, click "Admin Tools" tab on the right, click once on Startup Manager icon on the right pane below. This will open Startup Manager window.

I meant post it here by typing. I want to see if there is an unwanted space somewhere in the line.

Highlight and right click on "Smart Defrag" line on the right pane after you open the Startup Manager, a right click menu will be opened. Choose and click "Jump To Entry". This will open "Registry Editor" window for:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

Check the items on the right pane of Registry Editor.

I hope the Registry part of my post is clear enough.

Cheers.

Okay, I installed AWC. When I get to the startup manager I right click on smart defrag line, then click jump to entry. The registry editor does not open. Instead, a windows explorer opens to:

C:\Users\proactive3\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

What am I doing wrong?

That's weird, in XP, in Vista, and even in Windows7, when I click on "Jump To Entry", Registry Editor window opens.

steam, are you restricted as a User to use Registry Editor?

Click Start, click Run, type regedit to the box, click OK. The Registry Editor window should open.

Follow the path below:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

and click on Run.

You should come to the same position like Jump To Entry.

Anyway, how about the rest of it and Startup Manager?

Cheers.

I changed the settings in the config.ini file just as you specified. I restarted. Nothing is different. As for the registry editing, in startup manager still when I right click and choose jump to entry, the windows explorer opens, not regedit. I am the administrator and there are no restrictions for the use of regedit.

I really appreciate your help, but all I wanted was a defragger that defrags on the run and which starts minimized to the system tray. Now I'm downloading and installing programs, being instructed to go to regedit, and on and on.

I just want a defragger that defrags on the run and which starts minimized to the system tray without spending my entire Sunday afternoon dealing with this. Why is this so difficult?

Again, thanks for your help, but I am frustrated. Why can't a person install a program and have it work?

Just to be sure, I uninstalled the program and reinstalled. I then restarted and the program is sitting open on my desktop. I don't want to have to minimize it every time for the rest of my life when I start it. Is there no simple solution?

Thanks again for trying to help me. Any other ideas?

As far as I understand, you don't want to go to Registry Editor, but I am not a magician and only one of the users here in the forum.

I can not tell you remotely my opinion or advice without knowing as much as I can. You did not even tell me the whole string yet.

I hope you will be able to find a simple solution to your probem.

Thank you and cheers.

I went to registry editor, clicked on all the terms you typed, and after clicking run, all I see on the right is a few of the programs that open at startup. Smart Defrag is not one of them. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi steam

Hopefully you did a Clean Install!

I would try not to have it start up with Windows (even though it says recommended), but checkmark the other options as you prefer.

If you just do an over the top installation, some of the settings in the program folder will not be changed, so before you install it again after you have uninstalled, you have to delete the program folder too.

Cheers

Ok enoskype

Sorry - to both of you! Must have read it without my glasses :-)

Then install-wise there is only the possibility of unblocking the program before install left.

Is it perhaps a Vista issue - only?

Cheers

solbjerg

solbjerg, the problem appeared when steam installed SD for the first time.

Trying both methods in post #8 of this thread has solved a similar problem of a Vista user. (post#9 of the same thread).

Cheers.
