Removing Log Files?

Hi

When I run the utilities Disk Cleaner feature in ASC (free version) I get a load of files show up. Tempofiles and cache I am aware of but what about log files that show up? Can I safely delete all of these without it affecting my computer? Also I am having problems with my computer because even though I have ran scans, deleted temp files, cleared cache etc my computer intermittently freezes. I have plenty of memory as I doubled it a few weeks ago. I have ran numerous AV scans and nothing is found. Please if someone can let me know a) is it safe for me to remove the log files and b) any suggestions as to why my computer freezes would be gratefully appreciated. I have Windows XP and IE7.
