Recommended Scan Settings?

Hi Nash,

This is not a recommendation, but this is what I do when using IS 360 PRO. (In fact, similar like Free version usage.)

-Automatic Scan is OFF

-Automatic Update is ON. But scheduled to yesterday, and only for once. (Will never do scheduled update. So it is really and truly OFF.)

-Real-Time protection ON.

-DOG detection is ON.

-Anti-Malware is ON.

-Minimize to system tray UNCHECKED.

-Execute at windows start UNCHECKED.

-Scan with IS 360 CHECKED.

-Unlock & Delete CHECKED.

-All extentions are UNCHECKED

-Quarantine treats when removing them CHECKED.

-Disable Automatic scan SELECTED.

-Perform Updating at a scheduled time SELECTED. (Option described above.)

-Show baloon tips in sytem tray CHECKED.

-High Level protection SELECTED

-DOG enable CHECKED

-Transparency NONE.

-Advanced Protection Against Unknown Threats ON

I use Check NOW button and click Show Details , and click Clean button.

Then, I USE Smart Scan. (Certainly updated to the latest database file.)

That's all.

Cheers.

Checks and Balances

Hi enoskype :-)

I have been reading about various Security 360 settings and suggestions scattered over this forum and have become a bit confused.

Hopefully this thread is the appropriate place to seek some answers that will be of benefit to me and maybe other newcomers.

Firstly, I am using the Secutity 360 Free and Avast Free and ZoneAlarm Free

-Automatic Update is ON. But scheduled to yesterday, and only for once. (Will never do scheduled update. So it is really and truly OFF.)

Why don't you want to get an automatic update, doesn't the automatic update happen in the background with the Pro version ?

-Minimize to system tray UNCHECKED.

What benefit, if any, is there in having Minimize to System Tray CHECKED. I realise it is easy access to Security360 but most importantly, are all features still funtioning when UNCHECKED ?

Do you have Minimize to system tray UNCHECKED to save on resources (is that the right word) ?

I checked in Task Manager > Processes and found:

Minimize to Tray- CHECKED

is360srv.exe 216k

is360.exe Jumping around between 376k > 648k > 1,648k

is360tray.exe Jumping between 680k > 1,748k

Minimize to Tray- UNCHECKED

is360srv.exe 216k

Since the combined processes of is360.exe and is360tray.exe would be jumping between 1,000k > 3,400k do you consider this too much ?

Unlock & Delete CHECKED.

Is this safe ? Being a newcomer to computers I was too scared to CHECK this.

I am sure it's intended function is to unlock and delete nasties but it also looks like it could unlock and delete something important.

If a user is unsure of what they are doing is it better to leave this UNCHECKED until confirmation is recieved, probably from this forum.

-Execute at windows start UNCHECKED.

Why not start is360 at Windows StartUp

Isn't the main reason for installing Security360 (or any protection) to have that protection at all times.

Do you just manually run Security360 at various times because you have some other protection happening in the background ?

-All extentions are UNCHECKED

Could you please explain Scan Settings > Extension. I have no idea what any of this means or why I should check or uncheck anything.

-Disable Automatic scan SELECTED

Is this just because you like to have the final say ( :-) so do I)

I hope these questions aren't too dumb.

I like so many others, am just looking to get my computer as secure as possible without having to rob a bank or learn programming :-)

Hi enoskype,

I have same queries as wozofoz, I am using settings similar to yours cause I found this will take less resources. I do scan manually from time to time, and it works fine to me. I just wonder whether the Real-Time Protection still works in the background? Can you, or anyone in IOBit, tell me about this?

Thanks,

Sam

Hi Wozofoz, hi samtso,

As I mentioned in my earlier post, the preferences are only to my taste and usage style, so should not be taken as recommendations.

Why don't you want to get an automatic update, doesn't the automatic update happen in the background with the Pro version ?

First of all, I don't want anything to be changed or inserted without my knowledge if possible. I am lucky that there are options in IS 360, so I can use it whichever way I like. (Not true for a lot of software, especially MS ones.:-x)

My firewall is adjusted so as to inform me about any program's (there are exceptions like IE, and AV, etc.) internet connection request.

Automatic Update of IS 360 PRO does it's function in the background, and that is what I don't want.

Second reason is that, when I modify some files, such as information.ini for translation purposes, I don't want it to be changed automatically, and, if there is only one update, such as new database file, I can cancel the download and installation by manual update. (Please see New database to Download thread.)

That's why I said "like Free version"

I prefer to use IS 360 on demand rather than automatic, so when I close the program from (X), it is not interfering with anything until I want it to do so.

If IS 360 is running and minimized to taskbar (not system tray) instead of closing, then all features are functioning, when system tray option is UNCHECKED, of course, unless you exit the program.

The resource usage of 3400k is not much at all, and it is not my reason of unchecking the system tray option, but it helps if you have limited RAM and Single Core PC.

This check is for the option of right-click context menu, so it is only used on demand. If you right-click a file, you will see the "Unlock & Delete" option in the menu. That is, instead of going to "Tools" section of IS 360, and running "Unlock & Delete" utility, and opening the file there, it is like a short cut to be used in right-ckick menu.

It is not only used to get rid of nasties, but also to be used when you really want to delete a file, but it is locked or connected to a running process.

You are right, but I prefer to do that manually, just after the start and when PC is settled down and idling. Too many programs at the startup of OS also causes problems other than late opening.

Yes to the second part of the question, and I do have several other security software running at the background.

Could you please explain Scan Settings > Extension. I have no idea what any of this means or why I should check or uncheck anything.

Scan executable files only

It is self explanatory, it will scan only executable files, ie. exe, dll, vbs, etc.

Skip files larger than 10 MB size.

You may have many very large image, video, DVD, files, and if you are sure from previous scans that they are clean, it will greatly reduce the scan time. You can change the size from the slider.

Scan with normal priority

As you may know, programs run with priorities, where you can see which priorities are the programs using, in Task Manager.

You can adjust the priority of Scanning of IS 360 by the slider.

If you change the priority of IS 360, and run it, you can check and see it by opening the Task Manager.

Higher Priority is the command to the computer that, when that program is running, it will have priority of CPU usage compared to other programs running in normal priority or less priority.

If you are using ASC, you will have an option for the programs, in their right-click menu, to run the program with " Boost with Advanced SystemCare", which is the same as to run with high priority.

Is this just because you like to have the final say ( so do I)

Yes, and because of the reasons I wanted to explain above.

When I test IS 360, then it is a different story, as I test all the functions seperately to control if the functions are working singularly and combined also.

Real-Time protection work in the background only if the IS 360 icon is in the system tray.

I hope the answers are to your satisfaction.

Cheers.

Excellent reply

Thank you so much enoskype, once again you have provided a clear and precise explanation

I can now have another look at my settings to see what might suit me best.

I too could probably go with just launching Security360 manually, I am already into the habit of scanning my download folder with Security360 and Avast before opening it and any files it might contain (caught one trojan dropper this way  )

Plus I usually do a CCleaner quick clean (ASC does the full clean) and a Smart Scan before putting my Netbook to bed.

Also I do an ASC clean & tune-up plus a Security360 Full Scan and possibly other scans when things don't 'feel' right.

It's a good time to grab a coffee and take a break :-P

Thanks again

All the best, woz of oz
