Opera 10.10 Featuring Opera Unite Proxy Service

Recommended Posts

Several weeks ago I downloaded the original Opera 10.10 with Opera Unite snapshot from the Opera Desktop Team Blog and all of the subsequent Opera 10.10 snapshots that they frequently provide, but it wasn't until yesterday that I decided to devote some time to turning Opera 10.10 into a web Server using the Unite Proxy Service. All that has to be done is to initiate the Unite service which is the icon that looks like a 3 bladed fan 3rd from the top on the left hand side of the browser's GUI and just click on which services you want to load and use...

As you can see in the screen capture of my Opera 10.10 Browser the features in Opera Unite are Home, File Sharing, Fridge, Media Player, Photo Sharing, Sonar, Web Server, and lastly Trash. You can find the definition of each of these features as well as several very helpful video tutorials at http://unite.opera.com/. At the time of this screen capture I had Sonar on to help the Opera Development Team load test the Unite Proxy Servers.

This is what my Opera 10.10 Unite Photo Sharing Page looks like to those that I share the URL and password with, but you can also make the page public and viewable by the search engines if you like. This presents 12 of the photos that I have taken with my Sony DSC H-9 camera in uncompressed .jpeg format which are between 6 and 10 MB each and are now directly downloadable from my computer without the need to be hosted on an intermediate server which preserves the quality of the uncompressed photos. Unite Photo Sharing also allows me to share my higher resolution photos which are in 40-45 MB Photoshop PSD Format which I could never load onto a photo hosting site without severe compression.

I also have an instance of the Opera 10 browser that I run virtualized in a separate Sandbox from the Sandbox that I run Opera 10.10 in. Currently Opera 10 is a stable version while Opera 10.10 is currently still in development and if you are so inclined you can download the very latest snapshot of Opera 10.10 and live on the bleeding edge of this emerging technology where virtual Sandboxing of the browser is recommended until the final release of Opera 10.10 with Unite which hopefully will be soon.
