Try this a-squared by emisoft scanner as well.

Try this small, fast scanner to check for malware on your system as well. It is very small and fast, made by a very reputable respected vendor...Its called MalAware and is free. You must be online to run it. Find it here:

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/malaware/

This scanner won't revove infection but will identify infection.

Please run it and report the results here.

Also can you go to the tools section of Iobit 360, run a hijack scan, and paste it here?

Do you have many apps running in the system tray on the bottom right of your screen?

Thanks Melvin, Sorry about the delay - been away again.

I ran the malware scanner and it found 6 objects:

KaZaA - which I think was a music share thing I used to use. Under that it says: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid{loads of numbers}

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\clsid{loads of numbers}

dl.tvunetworks.com

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid{loads of numbers}AppID

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid{loads of numbers}InprocServer32ThreadingModel

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\clsid{loads of numbers}AppID

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\classes\clsid{loads of numbers}InprocServer32Threadi

I've got 7 icons in the bottom right hand corner.

Where is the Tools section? I can't see Hijack anywhere.

Hi ricko!!!

Welcome back!!!

As I mentioned before, this will only identify infection/corruption very rapidly.

Do you Watch tvu... if so keep.

The kazaa is a remnant. Neither of these will slow you down though, I think. The tvu might spy on you/ insert tracking cookies...

What anti-spyware do you use??

You may consider SuperAntiSpyware. It is good and free.

Also has there been any improvement in boot speed and overall performance at all???

Thanks Melvin,

I use PC Tools Spyware Doctor.

I think there has been a slight improvement in boot speed etc. It still seems to take an inordinately long time to do anything else though,

I've now done a clean install which has come up with over 300 problems on the registry fix. A lot of them seem to have the same sort of HKEY names as previously mentioned. Which ones to I put in the ignore list?

I'll try and interrogate ASC for the other stuff now.

Ignore list.

Allow ASC to repair all the registry errors, ignore none!

Please do post a system log when you can!!

Do you have open memory slots in your machine? I'm sure you can come by some memory upgrade for cheap as it is old. Maybe even free!

That is the most sure way for speed for you!

I must admit I'd come to that conclusion, except that my remedy was to ditch it and start with a new one (I'm not sure about compatability issues for memory with a PC this old).

I'll try and suss out the log tomorrow.

Thanks for your help with this Melvin.

Aye!

What I'm saying is, If you identify the type of memory, you can go to most any computer store that does repairs (especially those that recycle old machines) and they will probably be able to provide you an extra card for next to nothing... verify that you have a slot available... If only two slots occupied by 2, 256 cards, you will have to pull one and replace it with a 512.

Or pull both and replace with two 512s.

Some of the old machines had 4 slots available... put in four 512s and you've got 2 gigs!

Will take a little legwork, but easily doable!

You can even look on ebay.

You are most welcome! This forum is here to support you any way we can!!

Hi friend

One could just use the memory system scanner tool @ crucial dot com.

Hi friend. I just ordered Two 512 GB cards for my 5 year old Dell from crucial. I think they were 40+$ for the pair. My PC is running faster and better than it did the day I installed it. That's a pretty cheap way to go.---garybear Its nice to have a new PC also but I like my xp3 and I hate giving that up. http://www.crucial.com/ PS Melvin's way is the cheapest. I'm just old and lazy.

Windows Defender ?

....I think there has been a slight improvement in boot speed etc. It still seems to take an inordinately long time to do anything else though.....

Hi, just one question, just in case.

Do you have Windows Defender installed ?

I don't know how it first got on my NetBook, I guess it was me not checking a Custom Windows Update thoroughly and agreeing to install it, but once I un-installed it my Boot time and general performance improved dramatically.

So now, "do you to have Windows Defender installed ?" is one of the first questions I ask when people talk about slow Boot and generally sluggish computer

All the best, woz of oz

Hi ricko

I just wonder:

What are your settings in services (services.msc) ?

A lot of Not Available in your quote!!

To send a large file - try doing it zipped!

Nice ironic joke! ;-)

Cheers

solbjerg

I've just noticed the bit where it says "speed: Null Mhz". At least it's got that right!!;-)

Melvin - I've just checked Security Analyser and there are no problems at the moment. There will be tomorrow - I'll post it then.

Can you tell what to sort of thing I need to put in the search on, say, ebay to ensure compatability? DRAM memory card?

Solbjerg - Do you mean type "services.msc" in the run box? I've tried that and got a list of things. As for posting it zipped...er...I wouldn't know where to start :???:

Hi ricko

Have you read Usage of IObit Products?

Yes services.msc In Run

Did you go through them and check if they are set correctly and to your satisfaction?

You can find several recommandations on the internet, - mentioned in Usage of IObit Products too.

The way to zip is straightforward - just right click on the file you want to send and zip it (compress it) then attach it to your post - procedure explained in Usage of IObit Products.

Cheers

solbjerg

p.s. list over services can be saved easily -take a look at the screenshot - should be understandable even though it is in Danish

Thanks chaps.

Hi friend. Click on save report on the bottom right . Save to your desktop or where ever you can find it. Send it to Zip file and send to the forum. This log is found in ASC3 Security Analyzer.

Ty Garybear!!

Ricko, If you really want to improve your machine, we can help. If you don't want to then quit!

By not paying attention and asking us to hold your hand... you show no interest...

You have google and a brain. Use them!!!

If you install IS360, go to tools section on left side, click Hijackscan and copy/paste the report here... I may be able to assist you further!!! By saying I run (this and that) and not being able to post a system log from (this or that)... doesn't help us help you!!

Garybear has made it easy for you... so you won't have to work... follow his instructions "only if you want to, or if you're available, or otherwise when its convenient to you"

Its apparent that you have access to a different machine... you could go to your local library and have at least T5 internet access speed!

I am always willing to help those who want to help themselves and those they love. My history in my life... and here demonstrates this.

So step up, and pay attention if you care! Or just fade away into the memory of the good forum members here, as another "user".

How do you like me now???

Mel

I seem harsh here, but am not; I'm just saying that if you want to pick and choose, not spend the time/effort required(do the legwork ), or not trust (just post a system log)... then continue in this thread; draws attention from those who want to help themself... thats all. If I seem to vent or rant I apologize!! Google/yahoo/Bing... etc are there for everybody to use equally. And most pay attention and try to help themselves!!!

Thanks for that.

How do I like you now? How can I possibly comment Mel - I've never met you.

I buy a computer to use. I don't consider it a hobby messing about with it and knowing about what makes it tick. Fortunately people like you (and people that make things googleable - is there any difference) revel in knowing this stuff, which is great for the rest of us. I switch it on and use it -thats it, until it starts to play up. Then I go on Google and find something that purports to be the cure for all ills - free of charge. So I download it. Not much happens except that it says that I have umpteen other problems that won't get sorted out by the free edition. So I pay for the better version and guess what - no difference.

The fact that there is a dedicated forum is a real relief for people like me, who "show no interest". Computers (hardware and software) is simply an area that is totally alien to me and I haven't got the confidence to tread into the unknown because of the possibility of irretrievably cocking it up.

In the past when I've looked at more memory - its a minefield of different types, different numbers of pins etc. My last post was simply asking if you could tell the type of memory from the info that YOU asked me to post. I certainly can't and I don't think any amount of googling would help much either.

I've unzipped things in the past (ooohh no stoppit missus), but never zipped anything. I assumed you needed to buy winzip or something to do it.

I haven't got access to another machine, but I could go to the local Library - I could also take it to a computer shop and pay for them to sort it out or go to PC world and buy a new one that would see me through another 5 years. All these things are possible, but when you have people offering expert advice - free, and generally in a helpful friendly manner, it'd be stupid not to use them.

It looks like the sensible thing is to take all the help and advice you can get. The trick is being able to know the point at which people are going to get p****d off with your lack of knowledge of the basics.

Thanks for your help so far and I forgive you your rant - you clearly think I deserve it!

I've just downloaded IS360 and with the shots that Garybear has kindly posted even I should be able to follow it.

Hi ricko

Please ricko read the thread Usage of IObit Products

Zipping a folder - right click the file/folder and choose "send to" and there choose "compressed folder" - notice where it is placed if you want to access it again :-)

Apart from using the tools in ASC for finding out about the memory (RAM)

(Ready Access Memory) there is also the purely mechanical approach

Open up the computer case and find the sockets that hold your RAM sticks (they are usually black about 10 -15 centimeters long 4-5 centimeters wide and 4-5 millimeters thick :-)

Loosen one of them from its holder in the bracket - take it out gently and read what it says on it :-) Don't use any iron tools in there and no wet hands or electricity or magnets. :-)

Cheers

solbjerg

Thanks Solbjerg - I'd sussed out the zip process from Gary Bear's screenshots.

I downloaded IObit last night and it cleared a load more stuff (registrys etc) that ASC hadn't. Not sure if I'm imagining it but it does seem to be doing things quicker. Thanks for the Haynes Manual on computers - That's really useful, but I'll leave it until the weekend when I've got more time. I'll also sit down and wade through the usaede stuff again.

In the meantime this is the Hijack scan from IObit - hopefully zipped!
