Bug? Not releasing external HDDs?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that windows will not release an external USB HDD while smart defrag is running. I have SD set to only auto defrag the system volume but apparently its still monitoring other devices. This occurs on both vista and XP, with 1.30 and 1.40v of smart defrag.

I'm a getting the same thing. I use TrueCrypt volumes, as well as extenal USB drives, and I have to quit out of SmartDefrag every time I need to dismount a drive. SmartDefrag is great and I'd like to keep using it -- please provide an option to ignore removeable drives.

Hi Iggman, hi Lane,

Please havea look at Post 13. Valuable Informative Links , and follow the link under:

Safely removing portable hard drives without exiting SmartDefrag or using "Unlocker".

Remove portable safely

in USAGE of IOBIT PRODUCTS thread.

This is not a bug but a known aspect of SD by IObit. I am sure IObit is working on it.

Cheers.

Unfortunately, according to the site of the "workaround", it only works with XP Home. I'm using Vista and Windows 7. I really hope they can fix this, or I will probably have to stop using it. I've found it to be very inconvenient as I use a lot of removable drives. Too bad, SD is a great tool!

Hi Lane,

Have you tried using Unlocker 1.89 in Vista and Windows7 ?

Cheers.

Yes. Thanks for the suggestion, but it's not really easier than shutting down SD, ejecting the drive, then starting up SD again. I've been doing that, but it's a bit of a pain.

It would be great if IOBit could add a "ignore removable drives" checkbox to the Options like they did for flash drives. Seems like it could be solved in the identical way. I don't mean to sound like a whiner, especially since this is free software -- I just want to make sure it's known that the problem exists and the "workaround" doesn't really solve it what I would guess is a reasonably common problem. Lots of people use USB drives.
