problems with formatting thumb drive

Hi jsr

1. Right click My Computer (Select Manage)

2. Open Devise Manager (find your usb flash/thumb drive)

3. Right click the drive - select Properties

4. Select Optimize for performance

5. Click OK

6. Open My Computer

7. Select format on the flash/thumb drive

8. Choose NTFS in the dropdown System box

That ought to do it.

In my opinion there is nothing gained by trying to defrag flash drives!

If you want it "defragged" you could buy another flash drive with the same capacity or more - copy the content of the first flash stick to the new usb stick and then delete the content of the first, then either keep it there or copy it back to the thumb stick and delete it from the newly bought - in either case the content will be "defragged"

Nothing speedwise will be gained though - that is the nature of solid state memory sticks.

Hi jsr

Does it work? If you copy somthing onto it? If you copy it from the thumbdrive and place it in one of your other drives?

Cheers

What brand ?

What brand is it ?

If it's a known brand it should have warranty, go to the brand website and try to register it for warranty.

At the Transcend website they asked for my name, who I bought it from and the serial number. This was accepted.

If it is a fake it will probably be rejected.

If it's not a known brand you should still try to find the website if you haven't done so already

When you right cick on it in My Computer and select Properties does it show 30 > 32 GB ?

All the best, woz of oz

I've also found an interesting thread :

http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-43792-unable-to-format-kingston-64gb-pen-drive

There are a few good posts in there. The subject seems to be about 64GB Kingston drives, but some suggestions could apply to other brands as well.

One poster had this to say about 64GBKingston drives :

Here is a note to all having issues with 64GB Kingston flash drives. Kingston stamps the metal part of the USB interface with 2 or 3 rows of numbers. The counterfeit ones will not have this marking. If you have a unit without these markings and your having issues with formatting it, you will never be able to format it as a 64GB drive. At best, try to return it to where you purchased it from.

32GB thumb drives are large capacity and expensive, I know, but if I were to buy one, I'd make sure I could return it if there was a problem... eBay isn't always your best bet for things like this.

http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-127-hp-usb-disk-storage-format-tool

first thing let me say this DO not format a pen drive..

unless you have the right tool ..formatting with XP or vista Win7 will reduce the drive volume.in other words if say its a 4 gig it will reduce it to 1 gig.a 32 to 8 gig and so on..

i still use my gifted on a Kingston 128 mg now i formatted this and it reduced it to 80mg..and was upset it happened.now using the right tool got it back ,and never did it again..

i think its best to just delete the pen drive instead (empty it) i also have a Transcent pen drive and never formatted it.like its been already posted thy are different to a hard drive..and i think never need it

the reason i post this is i did thinking at the time it was safe to do so .Lazy way of cleaning of the files.
