ASCService.exe 4MB RAM

Recommended Posts

It is in ASC 4 main folder, ASCService.exe 344 KB.

It is using only 1.1 MB in my Win 7 Pro when ASC4 is running in the system tray.

The weird thing is that the process doesn't end when the ASC4 is exited, and when the process is ended in Task Manager manually by force, neither running ASC4, nor running ASCService.exe manualy keeps it in Task Manager.

When run manually, it is briefly seen in task Manager and closes.

You have to start it in services, and by default it is Automatic.

IObit should enlighten us about what it is used for.

Cheers.

???

It's not in My ASC-4 folder!

But I am using 4Beta V1.5, Not 2.0. Is that the difference?

I decided to wait about downloading 2.0, Until You Guys Checked it Out.

Sounds like I made the Correct decision.

Is it a RAM Optimizer, that clears unused RAM, that's loaded in background all the time?

If so, I don't think I need that?

I used a RAM Optimizer back in the W-98 and 512KB total RAM days.

It was good if your computer did not have enough RAM to run some programs.

But it really slowed things down for the short time it was running.

(you could schedule how often it ran)

Does 2.0 have anything about RAM Optimizer in Settings>> Automatic Services>> Automatic Care page ?

I bet that is what replaced the 'Automatic Care when Idle' option that was Grayed-out and not operational in version 1.5?

Hi Toppack,

In ASC4 Beta2 "Care for your computer when idle" option is active.

ASC's RAM optimization is done by SmartRAM.

Have you tried running SmartRAM utility with all options "ON" except "Clean clipboard"?

It worths trying for a while to see if it is any help.

It helped me a lot using in XP Pro with 1 GB of RAM. Also I am using it on Win7 Pro where Virtual XP is using 768 MB of 2 GB.

Cheers.

So, you don't think that is what ASCService.exe Does?

I thought maybe there was another that was loaded and ran in background, since it was added to 2.0?

Yes, SmartRam is a very good utility.

I thought we were trying to figure out what ASCService.exe Did and where it was activated?

ASC 4 2.0 is on scheduled not idle where it uses windows scheduler, and the process is running with 1.484MB RAM, when I made this thread it was at 4MB. It doesn't appear to do anything from what process monitor sees o.0

Using a service makes sense for the idle configuration, maybe register it where it is under svchost.exe in processes tables. I reported on some bugs in other parts of configuration too where boxes randomly check themselves, like context menu ones, this seems to be another to add to the list.

I am positively sure nothing to do with RAM

If it has Nothing to do with RAM, What are the RAM numbers you both put after the ASCService.exe program name? Where did that come from?

(Captainron put 4.MB and you put 344.KB)

Well, 344KB is the size of the file.

Infact, I have mentioned that, as a process, it was using only 1.1 MB of memory which is close to captainron's observation.

I should have said it is nothing to do with optimization of RAM though . Certainly, as a process it uses memory and occupies that much of memory of the RAM.

In my opinion, it is a service dealing monitoring the idleness of the PC, and controlling SD if it should run. What else it does, is beyond my knowledge.:-(

Anyway, today a new version is released, SD 2.0.1 .8:)

Cheers.

Hi Toppack

Happens to me too once in a while :-)

But in this instance it was just to clarify because I suspected that you had RAM too much on your mind :-)

Yes, I may have been going in the Wrong direction with the RAM Optimizer guess, but it could be one thing that the program monitors?

I am certainly curious about what it really does?

I disabled ASCService.exe by changing the file-name.

So far, I have not found anything effected by it not being in memory.

But I have not run all the utilities since doing that.

I will try some more tomorrow.

I am amazed that no one will tell us what it does?

SysInternals Process Monitor detects no file/network/registry activity. I think it just monitors activity and fires other processes up when idle, or maybe has the idle tools integrated.

  • 3 months later...

I just noticed that ASCservice.exe was loading at boot-up Again.

(I don't know how long it's been active this time)

I had changed the name of the file, to keep it from loading before,

and I had to rename it Again. :-?

Anyone ever find out for sure what it Does?

The only thing I can find that it does is Use Up RAM!
