Frequently Used programs in XP Start menu gone after Deep Care [Fixed]

Recommended Posts

Posted

After performing an Adv SysCare v4free "Deep Care," the frequently used programs list (MFU) is gone from the XP SP3 Start menu. I've tried resetting the # of programs to be shown in the list, but no help.

Anyone else experienced this and/or know how to fix?

Thanks

When using new and unfamiliar utility software, that is designed to remove things from your computer, it's always best to know and understand what has been configured, in the settings, before running the program.

The 'Privacy-sweep', Registry-fix' and 'Junk-files-clean' utilities have many check-box options, to be used to select what you want to delete.

I still have not tried the 'Deep Scan' option in 'Registry fix', since I'm not sure what it does. ;-)

Ahh, so that answers two questions: it's not just my computer and it probably IS due to using DeepCare.

Still leaves the question of how to fix it and get the MFU working again....

I think what you are calling MFU is more commonly called the MRU-cache.

(Most Recently Used)

That locations data are stored in a Registry cache.

If the MRU does not operate anymore, then that Registry storage area has been edited, removed or corrupted somehow.

The path, in registry, to that cache, is not the same in different OS versions.

So, you need to find where it's located in your OS's registry, to check it or edit it.

Or maybe a very smart Registry-Repair utility will find and fix it?

I prefer to do the registry editing myself, when I can, so I can keep good records of exactly What was changed and When it was changed.

I dont know how to do this but im pretty sure that ASC 4 creates a backup state before getting rid of anything, so you should, somehow be able to "rollback" to the old settings.

I think!

There are changes to the registry after a deep scan, this "user tracking" setting reversal fixed it for me:

A warning before you start - it is advisable to back up your registry before attempting to change any settings.

1. Hold down the Windows key and press R.

2. Type regedit and click OK.

3. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER

then Software

then Microsoft

then Windows

then CurrentVersion

then Policies

then click on the actual word "Explorer"

4. Look for an entry on the right side pane for NoInstrumentation.

5. Right-click the NoInstrumentation entry and click Modify.

6. To re-enable user tracking Set the Value data to 0.

Hope this fixes it for you.

Thanks for the Info Phil.

I though maybe I should issue a Warning to those not familiar with Regedit. The procedure Phil is describing is for the Regedit program, for editing the registry.

Which is a Good thing as long as you Don't make any mistakes that you don't realize you are making.

Editing the wrong registry keys or doing them incorrectly can cause More problems, so be very careful.

Once you do it a few times, It becomes as easy as eating Ice-cream, though. :-D

I assume that registry Path is for XP, I think the path in other OSs is completely different?

It works for me

Thanks, this fix worked on my XP Home SP3

I would just like to add the following

If interested you can read the articles I found on the Registry item NoInstrumentation

Start Menu Most Frequently Used programs (MFU) list is empty

Policy settings for the Start menu in Windows XP

This fix requires you edit the registry so please backup the Registry or at least create a System Restore Point before proceeding (can't say that too much)

You will need to Restart your computer after making the changes to NoInstrumentation so close all programs and save all work before following those steps.

After making the change and Restarting your computer:

• Launch Advanced SystemCare 4

• Click Deep Care

• Tick System Optimization only (to make it quick)

• Click Scan Now

System Optimization should report at least 1 Problem

• Click Show Details and you will see:

Disable Last Access for NTFS and speed up disk access - Current Value 0 - Recommended 1

• Right click Disable Last Access for NTFS and speed up disk access

• Click Ignore this problem

• Click OK

Done, this will not be reported as a 'problem' again

Already stated

As I posted in my previous reply, it is possible to Ignore this problem so it won't show in a System Optimization scan again.

After making the change and Restarting your computer:

• Launch Advanced SystemCare 4

• Click Deep Care

• Tick System Optimization only (to make it quick)

• Click Scan Now

System Optimization should report at least 1 Problem

• Click Show Details and you will see:

• Right click Disable Last Access for NTFS and speed up disk access

• Click Ignore this problem

• Click OK

Done, this will not be reported as a 'problem' again

Do both of these need to be done?

I'm having the same problem with the MFU not working after the Deep Scan. I thought I had all my settings right but must not have. I did Advanced SystemCare's Rescue and the MFU is working again but I don't want it to happen again. So I'm wondering if changing the System Optimization is all I need to do or does the NoInstrumentation registry change need to be done too?

Thanks!

Welcome

Welcome to the forum boolu

Since your 'MFU' list is working then changing the System Optimization is all you need to do.

Advanced SystemCare will not change the Registry value of NoInstrumentation when Disable Last Access for NTFS and speed up disk access is in the Ignore List.

Thanks much for the quick help. It's greatly appreciated! I was hoping I wouldn't have to do anything with my registry.

loss of funcitons after install of Adv. System Care 4 Deep scan with System Optimizat

I not only lost Recent programs list, but Accessories, Systems tools Backup (including deleted files from hard drive), and lost the Bing.com intelligent search capability from the IE8 URL input.

It is too late for me to do a system restore as I continued working and have backed up since.

Would a windows and IE8 repair be too risky? If not, how do I do it?

Hi mono_demon,

You don't have to play with the registry if you follow the advice of wozofoz to put Disable Last Access for NTFS and speed up disk access option of System Optimization to Ignore List.

Cheers.

that applies if the changes hasnt been made and if the user is already aware of this issue. but what if they didnt know about this issue, disable the restore option, or the changes has already applied to the system?
