IMHO, when defragmentation is in concern, MFT is Master File Table where all the information about all files or where the information of information of files are stored in NTFS file systems.

 

All information about a file, including its size, time and date stamps, permissions, and data content, is stored either in MFT entries, or in a space outside the MFT that is described by MFT entries.
