Costa Concordia Tragedy

This was a completely preventable tragedy. The only proper move the Captain made was to understand the severity of the damage quickly and get the ship into relatively shallow water close to shore. This link containing video from one of the internal security cameras documents the violence of the collision with a rock formation. Notice the people sliding about on the floor as the ship rocks back and forth along the keel! The big guy in the horizontally striped shirt seems to take the brunt of the pummeling of the furniture as the ship rocks along the keel.

 

The crew members in the foreground at the beginning of the video appear to be disconnecting a computer to perhaps solve an issue when the ship hits the rock formation.

 

The one bar tender seems to be approaching the bar to deliver a freshly opened ale.

this video has been around for ages, seen it before and is not the recent italian saga.

 

if you google cruise ships in storms there are several bad senario's on youtube.

if you ever go on a cruise ship bigger is better, we were caught in an old ship "balmoral" in a force 10 near scandinavia in the north sea and were thrown around all over the place [not as bad as your vid] then another time were in a large ship "independence of the seas" in the bay of biscay in force 11, the wind speed one km per hour short of a force12 hurricane with 50 foot swells and the ship coped with the storm with no problems.

All modern Cruise-ships look too Top-heavy to me. :shock:

I can't figure out how they stay afload at all. :roll:
