new kid w/ questions

hey-got vista a short time ago-on vista notebook, the time to defrag is hours long; i saw a message once about turn some thing off to speed up the program while defraging; i have no idea where or what to turn off on vista-will some one explain in layman terms, vista is really still new to me.
