IObit SmartDefrag asked for server rights from ZoneAlarm a few minutes after computer startup. Why would IObit SmartDefrag need server rights?

ZoneAlarm Dialog:

SERVER

"IObit Smartdefrag.exe wants to accept connections from the internet"

Posted

This is simply for use with the automatic updates option in the settings as well as for the side banner that contains current IObit news in ISD

Thanks.

Security people tell me not to accept a program asking Zone Alarm for server rights unless you know what the program is doing.

Yes, this is correct.

If you are unsure of a program you should not accept its request to gain access to the internet. However, if you know the program isn't spyware or malware then you can safely connect to the internet with that software. This is the purpose of having rules for blocked or safe content in firewalls and this is why ZoneAlarm asks you what you want to do since the program will not distinguish between what is good and bad for everything.

I can assure you that AWC and ISD are not spyware or malware and no problems due to these programs will occur from allowing them internet access. Even software like Google Desktop requires internet access for updates (much the same as do the IObit products)
