I would like to get a definition of the optimizer. I have ran it over and over and it still is moving files. Should I continue to run it until all sectors turn green?

Yes,you should let it run to move files together to make more big free gaps on your disk.

So....is Optimizer akin to the compacting function in defrag in XP?

Free space!!! You get free space???

 

I don't know about free space. My screen shows all red. No free space, but my c: drive has 2.7 GB with 1.3 GB free space. Can anyone explain!

Since your disk have been used for quite a long tim, you have fragmented files all over your disk.

 

If each cluster has some fragments, than you can not see the free space in them. The red color (fragments) is dominant there.

If you can defrag, then you will see free space(white)

Have you tried Mark Russinovich's contig and/or Pagedefrag or Power Defragmenter (by eXcessive Software )with contig?

Thanks! I found contig this morning and have been using it all day. The disk was REALLY bad and has taken a great deal of time and patience to get enough contiguous space to defrag some bigger files.
