Last Access Time

Recommended Posts

It seems from other forum topics that SmartDefrag uses the last access date of NTFS. This is disabled by default on Windows 7.

I suggest that the algo takes into account the directory structure, and possibly nicely warns the users (best with a non-intrusive message). Below is an example of message that could be displayed:

Last Access Time has been disabled on your system, your choices are:

  • Enabling it would allow much better Deep Defragmentation
  • Keeping it disabled will improve the read performance by about 5% but SmartDefrag defragmentation won't be as efficient

The issue if the SD algo is relying on it, is that files modified will get near the head, but files mostly read (even very often) will be kept further away.
