Lost USB disk access after scan - bug?

W/7 explorer recently lost access to my external Seagate 320gb drive after doing a scan. As best I recall a scan stopped reporting because it encountered disk errors and wanted to schedule a fix on system restart. After restarting I saw no action being taken but W/7 could not access my drive J:. I tried everything I could find on taking control of the drive and setting permissions. I have access again but not sure why the problem went away. I did dl a Seagate disk manager pgm and ran some basic tests and nothing showed up as an error yet after running this program I got access again under windows. It sounds like UAC thought I had no permission to use the drive although I took as much control as I could. Using a 3rd party file manager running admin privileges I WAS able to access the disk and main directory.

I'm just wondering if some bit can be set on the drive to prevent access by other users when a defrag or error correction routine might be scheduled to run but if it does not eventually run might leave the drive in some protected mode? Could there be any problem with detecting drive errors then scheduling correction on a system restart but in fact not execute as scheduled after the system has rebooted?
