  3. Hi bfbcping, I agree with you with the default option of Pro version about Yahoo!. I have already requested that from Tim. I hope they change it in future versions. I do not insist you to use it, but AWC3 Beta 2.51 works like a clockwork orange if you carefully choose the details. Cheers.
  4. Vista defrag improvements over XP defrag. One of the imrovements of Vista defragmentation is, unlike Windows XP, Windows Vista does not require 15% free space (unless you use the –w parameter from the command line). If there is any free space at all, Defrag will make an attempt to defragment the volume. Although it needs confirmation, also, Vista SP1 defragmantation is improved compared to original Vista defragmentation for the matter of decreasing the amount of time it takes to defragment a volume and providing better defragmentation. Cheers. EDIT: It is confirmed, please have a look at post #46 of this tread.

  7. KB925877 Remote Desktop Connection (Terminal Services Client 6.0) MUI Language Pack FIX for KB925877 stubborn uninstall problem when installing XP sp3!!! Hello guys, I had the installation problem for SP3 in one of the laptops which have OSs nearly identical with XP Pro sp2s. The problem was because of the istalled update KB925877 ["Remote Desktop Connection (Terminal Services Client 6.0) MUI Language Pack for Windows XP"] in one of them. But I don't understand why this update was in only one of them, since I have updated all of the optional updates in both of them. The problem does not end there. 1) You can uninstall it if it is in your "Add or Remove Programs" and everything may go OK. 2) If it is not in your "Add or Remove Programs", you can uninstall it from: C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB925877$\ folder and run spuninst.exe to remove it. The remove may not work!!!. 3) You may have deleted Windows uninstalls of updates to have more space in the disk. (CCleaner=> Clean=>check checkbox of "Hotfix Uninstallers" of "Advanced" option=>Analyze=>Run Cleaner) (My case.) 4) You may still have it in: C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB925877\ folder and run spuninst.exe to remove it. The remove may not work!!!. (Not worked in my case.) 5) Reinstalling and uninstalling KB925877 may not work. (Not worked in my case.) 6) Then comes the last resort. Go to the following item in Registry editor: My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Hotfix\KB925877 Export this reg. to where you like, to re-install it if something goes wrong. At this point, it is advisable to make an Automated System Recovery in XP Pro. Read this article (that samr has pointed out above) from Microsoft Help and support and the following articles ( 1 ,2 ,3 ) to do it. For XP Home, please read this article:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302700 DELETE KB925877 all together from registry. (Worked in my case.) 7) Install SP3 for XP either from Windows_Update or from Microsoft . 8 ) In my case, the following update did not show in Windows Update in any of the newly installed XP sp3 laptops after installing SP3. (One with problem , one without a problem of SP3 installation.) Install, Microsoft Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) Update for Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) "WindowsXP-KB942766-v6-x86-ENU.exe" from Microsoft . I hope this is helpful to those who have the same problem that I had. Cheers.
  8. BootVis BootVis is an application to check how long a Windows XP PC takes to boot, and then optimize the boot process, which is a Microsoft product but no longer available from Microsoft to download. Microsoft states: "BootVis.exe is a performance tracing and visualization tool that Microsoft designed to help PC system designers and software developers identify performance issues for boot/resume timing while developing new PC products or supporting software. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system." This reminds !!! me usage of Command window "defrag C: -b" and Tweak UI 2.10 . BootVis defines boot and resume times as the time from when the power switch is pressed to the time at which the user is able to start a program from a desktop shortcut. The application measures time taken during Windows XP's boot or resume period. BootVis can also defragment the files accessed during boot to improve startup performance by "Optimize System" option in the program. (However a similar optimization is already done in the background by Windows XP every three days.) Windows XP monitors the boot process over a period of boots - over a period of time. BootVis is used primarily to diagnose slow boots by identifying drivers that take a long time to load (can indicate a poorly written driver). One of the other things that it can be used for is to monitor a single boot process and to then take that information (exactly the same information that Windows XP gathers over a period of system boots) and perform the optimizations to driver loading. One of the other options that BootVis allows you to "perform now" is the partial defrag of the layout.ini files. You can download BootVis 1.3.37.0 (bootvis.msi) from here or here . It is interesting to read this comment. Please, also have a look at Clayton's_post . Cheers.

  10. Thank you for the info Budda_357, Please have a look to this thread by Tim. Now 2 is gone and we are in the 3rd. Cheers.
  11. Hi Budda_357, Why don't you try version 2.70, I am not sure but it could have been corrected. This version is released after this post of Tim as JustDave points out. Cheers.
  12. Hi john3347, For UAC problem, the solution is here . Cheers.
  13. Disable/Enable "Optimize hard disk when idle" in XP. Hi again, You can enable or disable "Optimize hard disk when idle" function of Windows from within "Tweak UI", which is a Microsoft product, part of "Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP". Tweak UI 2.10 is downloadable from here . If you wish to disable -Windows' rearrange files on the hard disk when the computer is not in use to improve performance- function, uncheck "Optimize hard disk when idle" checkbox, after clicking General link and scrolling under Settings and click "OK" button in Tweak UI 2.10. There may be times where you want to disable this: 1) You are using a third-party disk defragmenter. 2) You are running a laptop via a battery, and defragmenting your hard disk can use up power. Cheers.
  14. Hi ogrfnkl, I do agree with you. It was suggested as exactly as you said. I have lost once in a while the sound icon and the power icon, and when checked "Let Windows choose" location, I have noticed unchecked ones with no relation to sound and power. But, using Windows' choice sometimes corrected them. Although, it may be a tedious job to adjut to your preferences, but from time to time, it is a good idea to use it, as many unexpected programs or adjustments may change the default values. My interpretation is that, when Windows is doing that, it also adjusts, most of the things not written there, to default. You may have tried, but also unchecking aplying, and then checking aplying the "show icon in taskbar" checkboxes in the "Sound and Audio Device Properties" and "Power Options Properties" windows in Control Panel, bring back the icons of both of them. (Independent of each other.) Since your problem is not having the volume pop-up window, if it is not corrected by the other attempts, I would suggest to use the "chkdsk /F" command in the Command Promtp window. Please run "chkdsk /F" without "" in your command prompt window and answer yes "Y". Restart Windows. (start=>Run=>type cmd=>OK=>type chkdsk /F=>ENTER=>type Y=>ENTER.) In next start of Windows, your system files will be checked and corrected. I hope this helps. Cheers.
  15. Let Windows choose what's best for my computer Hi ogrfnkl, Have you tried the procedure below?: Righ click "My Computer=>click "Properties"=>click "Advanced" tab=>click "Settings" under "Performance"=>check "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer" under "Visual Effects" tab=>click "Apply" button=>click "OK" button=>click "OK" button=>Restart It may help. PS. The vbs file for EnableAutotray does more than to change the registry value. You can try it without any ill effect. Cheers.
  16. Hi ogrfnkl, Try this vbs script file, it had corrected mine before. (Double click after downloading.), (You can check the content, opening it with notepad.) Cheers.
  17. Contig & Power Defragmenter GUI Hi sunny staines, Thanks for Page Defrag from Sysinternals. ClearD989 has mentioned it in the post #2 of this thread and in this post. As I mentioned somewhere else, Sysinternals is bought by Microsoft in July 2006. It is a very useful program together with other programs from Sysinternals. The mother of the defrag programs "Contig.exe" is from them also. You can download Contig version 1.55 (100 KB)from here. Put it to the folder where your command prompt is, and run it in the command prompt window. To make it easier to use, there is a relatively small utility (483 KB) called Power Defragmenter, which enables Contig.exe to be used with GUI. (Graphical User Interface) You can download PowerDefragmenter.zip from here . Just, extract the zip file to the directory of your choice where you should put the Contig.exe together with it. Run "Power Defragmenter GUI.exe" from the same folder where Contig.exe is, and you can defrag a single file, a single folder, multiple files and multiple folders (4 at a time utmost), or the whole disk. Enjoy it!!! Hi ClearD989, As I mentioned in post #1 of this thread, unfortunatellly I don't know the logic of optimize in the recent ISD. My guess is, in the older versions, it was doing defragmentation and free space optimization. About Page defrag, thank you, you recall correctly from #4 post of this thread. Cheers.
  18. Hi ClearD989, I am positive that IObit is going to put a similar feature in the future in IObit SmartDefrag. I would like to add something to your opinion in this post and in this post in General Discussion of ISD section. Although I agree with you that when different defragmenters are used, different "best placement of the files" algorithms are used, but "defragmentation only" algorithm is the same and it is the same concept that all files are contiguous wherever they are. (No free space defragmentation and optimization) Most probably, your percentage difference came from system files fragmentation, and system restore files' excess size allocation. Cheers.
  19. MFT (Master File Table) defragmentation in Vista Here is another one from Microsoft Technet which is not known to many users: One of the features of the Windows Vista hard disk defragmentation utility is: Master File Table (MFT) defragmentation If the MFT is spread into multiple fragments, the defrag engine can combine the MFT fragments during defragmentation. Cheers.
  20. Browsingenhancer-1.dll dingvirey, Go to this web page and you will find a solution. cheers.
  21. seattletwodogs, Are you telling us that all 5 links shown in the web page that you downloaded the setup file of AWC Personal from are all corrupted, where the link is given in this post (#9) under "AWC 2.60 is available for downloading!!!" thread? I believe, you have a problem with the connection. Try to use a download manager such as "Getright". Cheers.
  22. fsutil dirty query C: solbjerg has reminded me of the command fsutil dirty query. fsutil dirty query, and fsutil dirty set commands are related somehow to defragmentation. Queries to see whether a volume's dirty bit is set. Sets a volume's dirty bit. When a volume's dirty bit is set, autochk automatically checks the volume for errors the next time the computer is restarted. If a volume's dirty bit is set, this indicates that the file system may be in an inconsistent state. The dirty bit can be set because the volume is online and has outstanding changes, because changes were made to the volume and the computer shutdown before the changes were committed to disk, or because corruption was detected on the volume. If the dirty bit is set when the computer restarts, chkdsk runs to verify the consistency of the volume. Every time you start a computer running in Windows XP, Autochk.exe is called by the Kernel to scan all volumes to check if the volume dirty bit is set. If the dirty bit is set, autochk performs an immediate chkdsk /f on that volume. Chkdsk /f verifies file system integrity and attempts to fix any problems with the volume. You cannot defragment volumes that the file system has marked as dirty, which indicates possible corruption. You must run chkdsk on a dirty volume before you can defragment it. You can determine if a volume is dirty by using the fsutil dirty query command. When Windows or a defrag program refuses to do a defragmentation because of the bad sectors, if query parameter first results with dirty disk, and then set parameter later setting the dirty bit, allows for the defragmenter to run. Usage is as below: 1) fsutil dirty query C: Response will be either "Volume C: is dirty" or "Volume C: is not dirty" 2) fsutil dirty set C: Dirty bit on drive C is set to dirty. Thank you solbjerg and cheers.
  23. (Command window "defrag C: -b") Did you know that? Hello guys, Here is how you manually execute what Windows do in every three days. Click "Start" button=>click "Run"=>type defrag C: -b=>click OK or, Click "Start" button=>click "Run"=>type cmd=click OK=>command window=>type defrag C: -b to command prompt=>hit Enter On a Windows XP-based computer, the Layout.ini file is in the %windir%\Prefetch\ folder. The Layout.ini file lists files and directories so that the Windows operating system can reference these files and directories when the operating system starts or when an application starts. The Windows operating system puts these files together on the disk to reduce seek time and to improve performance. The Layout.ini file is updated one time every three days to make the future startup of the Windows operating system and the startup of certain applications more efficient. I knew that the switches below, [-a] Analyze only, [-f] Force defragmentation even if free space is low, [-v] Verbose output (detailed, comprehensive), [-?] Display help text. worked with defrag command, but I didn't know that there existed a [-b] switch Enjoy it!!! Cheers.
  24. Hi solbjerg, I am not sure about the usable area of the hard disk, I think it may also differ from PC to Laptop. But, you are not far away with your calculation, and the writer is talking about 100-240 % performance difference between innermost and outermost tracks. Very good approach my friend. Hi samr, Very good points. According to my opinion, this could be one of the methods of defragmentation optimization. Coming to your placement of temp files, although one defrag program maker prefers to leave a space near the outer disc for temp files, this is not my piece of cake. You have to be doing things very regularly and cleaning very regularly your PC. I have given my point of view about that in this post which I will quote below. I would like to remind that all this is about an everyday used general purpose PC. Cheers to you all.
  25. Strategic File Placement Hi again, Here is a pretentious challenge by an expert of defragmentation and I thought it might be interesting to bring this to your attention and discussion.
