ubuntu and linux?

anbody know what the differences between linux and ubuntu are? i know ubuntu is linux based. why do people use it anyway? what are they for?

Ubuntu is an operating system. Kinda like Vista or XP for microsoft.

Hi IFP-Take a look at this if you haven't already.I've been looking on their forum,and checked it out on a friends PC,it's pretty sharp-comes with Firefox and other neat stuff-totally free!I've got plenty of room to throw up a partition and go with a dual boot system,just been a little to chicken s#@t to try it.There is the option to request the disk(also free)and run from boot that way.I believe it's what's referred to as open source(free flowing or without restriction)software-Google it up!
