COMPS.EXE Spyware Alert

Hi folks,

I am running Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit.

Friend of mine told me about Advanced SystemCare Free 3.1.1 ... so I downloaded it and installed it ... when the program asked me if I want to make a "Registry Back-Up" I said yes ...

And that is when my Problem started ... an Application by name "COMPS.EXE" kicked my CPU in high gear. When I checked the Task Manager I saw this .exe application hogging my resources ...

So, I googled it ... welll there is an Application called "COMP.EXE" but not "COMPS.EXE" ... and "PrevX" anti-spyware company says that COMPS.EXE is a bad thing.

BTW ... COMPS.EXE locks up my computer and never makes the Registry Backup.

Q1: Can someone tell me what is the Purpose of COMPS.EXE? And why is it come as a BAD thing?

Q2: Is Advanced SystemCare a Spyware!?!?

Q3: And why is it offered for FREE if it is this GOOD!?!?

I don't mean to insult anyone ... it just for a Program to act so Strangely right off the back is kind of SCARY!

But I guess this means that I have to go back to more Established and TRUSTED Freewares!

THANKS!

G!:)

It's probably just a false positive. On my PCs, neither Trend Micro, nor Zone Alarm, nor Sunbelt's VIPRE picks up COMPS.EXE as a threat. Also, look at the site linked by solbjerg...Prevx is calling COMPX.EXE malware based on "Determination: Automatically determined using Prevx centralized heuristics." In other words, COMPS.EXE is not known as a virus from past experience or reports, it's just that Prevx thinks it looks like a virus. I wouldn't worry about it.

For what it's worth, COMPS.EXE seems to be a compression utility. I'm guessing ASC compresses its backup files using COMPS.EXE. I know that at least the Backup Registry function (in Restore) creates a CAB file, which is a compressed file. I wonder if this is related to garybear's lockup problem when using Backup Registry?

Hi Dave

Yes of course I meant for him to take look (read) the linked site.

And you may have a point regarding garybears problem.

I have a file in Iobit folder called comps.exe (no problem)

Cheers
