The Biscay for some reason has a bad reputation.

Force 9.Beaufort-Strong gale, 9.(20.8-24.4 m/s)

(perhaps 50 feet waves is a little exaggerated?)

got caught once in a gale force 9 on a english channel ferry crossing it was bad but I do not think as bad as those pics.

I crossed the Baltic Sea in a force 11 (violent storm 11.(28.5-32.6 m/s)) fifty years ago by the ship that went from Bornholm to Copenhagen then

That was very very unpleasant - I had no sea-legs at that time. :-)

Today they usually do not sail if it is blowing that hard.
