I set the updater to check ever 3 days, but it goes on forever (10+ hours & counting) with no way to kill it, using all available CPU & slowing down real work. What gives?

Why not use one of the other options!

I think that there still may be some wobbly functionality in the scheduler.

IObit was advised about it some time ago.

It will hopefully be fixed in the next update.
