Any advice?

Recommended Posts

I just got a laptop a little while back. It's nothing special, in fact it's kind of a piece o' crap, but I love it just the same and am trying to make it the best it can be. It's a Microsoft Windows 2000 professional Thinkpad. I want to make sure it's as protected as it can be, but i don't know all the rules on that stuff (although i did bring this comp back from the dead somehow). I don't know what you need to know, but i figure i'll list some of the things i use. If anyone has any suggestions about what i should add or take off to make my comp run better and be better protected, I'd really appreciate the advice!!

Firefox (i have explorer 6 on here but i don't use it).

Advanced SystemCare

IObit Security 360 (and that iobit toolbar guy).

I use Microsoft Update

Microsoft Silverlight

VLC Media player

Windows media player (i feel like he's a problem i can't get rid of)

Ahead Nero OEM (I don't even know what this is)

AIM

PowerDVD (another thing i don't know if i even need)

Thanks, elame

Welcome here Elame87!

Firefox is fine for a browser!!! Keep it and use it if you like and are comfortable with it!!!

When you say... "that Iobit toolbar guy", Im not sure what you mean... do you mean you have Iobit toolbar?

Microsoft update is ok... keep using it! (By the way what version of windows do you have... XP,Vista,etc....)

Silverlight is probably not necessary... but keep it for now.

VLC player is good... it works and is versatile!

You should not try to get rid of Windows Media Player... keep it even if you don't use it.

AIM is obsolete instant messaging software... been replaced by live sites like facebook, myspace... etc.

Nero is a CD burning/production software that you probably don't need/want... it can be complex and you already have that capability in the other software you listed!

Power dvd is a HD/blu ray player, also having file management capabilities.

Who/where you got this machine from was concerned with management of large AV files.

I will go ahead and enter this post now and continue here in this thread you create.

Hi again Elame!

Do you see any evidence/Icons for Antivirus software? ( Avira, Norton, AVG, McAfee, Kaspersky, etc???)

How much experience do you have using computers?

Can you open Iobit 360, go to "tools" at bottom left, run Hijack scan, and copy/paste the report on your post here? (This will tell us much about your system.)

You said 2000 pro (windows version) got in a hurry and didn't notice.

First, you will need to obtain Revo uninstaller... you can get it for free... You need to get it and install it, You can find it here: http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html Just click on the blue link and download/install it.

Avira anti-virus will well support Win 2000

You may find Avira here: http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html

Avira is a highly respected, reputable antivirus that does support the 2000 platform. They have recently had a few support issues with updates, but have ironed them out. You can also read about avira and get user input on the Cnet link this connects you to.

Revo uninstaller is a comprehensive software removal tool that not only runs a softwares built in uninstall tool, but delves through your system to remove all traces in your system of the software you choose to remove. It will be useful for you to have... very highly recommended to have (reviews are on Cnet as well)

Carefull on Cnet though! Follow the good advice of friends or you will open a can of worms!!

Check out Avira and get it for now at least... You will be protected while you evaluate all the options and make your final decision on Antivirus!

Avast is good A/V as well. Thought you were unprotected and rushed to post... But see you removed avast already.

Peace, and prosperity to you!!!

Check the box to fix.

Open 360... go to tools on the left side, open and go to top left hijack, run it. Click scan only, then at end of scan(where all processes are listed) carefully (make sure you have the right entry)... click a check mark in the box next to the entry O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)

Then hit fix checked. will be removed then.

Good idea to reboot afterwards also.

P.S. Your system looks pretty lean and trim! Haven't had time to look at all the entries but even though old... should be decently crisp.

Believe this is the parent service.

From what I can see you are not using toolbars. If this is the case than this is the parent: O3 - Toolbar: @msdxmLC.dll,-1@1033,&Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINNT\system32\msdxm.ocx You can fix it in 360.

If you are using or currently running a toolbar than this may not be the case. The first log you posted was from ASC security analyzer and I advised you to utilize 360 hijack.

The easiest thing to do in that case would be to open ASC. Go to the right side of the care button, click on diagnose system, uncheck the top three, and run security analyzer (as you originally did) look for the entry:O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file), check it, then click fix checked. If its not there... I will be equally stumped.

I hope I have not confused you!

no, you did not confuse me. im actually pretty good with computers for a person who knows nothing about them. i think you misunderstood me earlier. i got this computer with nothing on it but windows 2000 and a couple viruses. i put everything else on it.

anywho, i found that pesky "toolbar" and deleted it.

thanks again

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)File Missing

This is spyware... it continues to run in your system... even though the parent software (no file) is gone.

Hi Melvin_Deal,

the File you mentioned there is not a spyware.

According to systemlookup it's AVG Security Toolbar.

Here you can look what it says.
