Unable to restore

hands off

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm new here.

I'm not sure what I did. I ran the ASC version 3.5.1 free version. I ran a cleanup. Didn't see any problems until I tried to reboot my computer, it wouldn't boot up correctly. (Stuff missing from the quick launch part of the task bar) I tried running the restore on ASC, it said it ran. It didn't undo anything though. I then tried to use "Windows System Restore" That won't work either. It says it did not complete successfully due to an error. I tried different restore points and none of them would work either.

What do I do now??????:-(

Hi

Unfortunately I personally can't help you much with this, haven't ever really needed the restore function in ASC.

I do have problems though with the System Restore Point function in Windows 7 aswell, tried it twice and both times when logging in i get an error message.

If you unfortunately don't have it now, I can recommend taking Image backups in the future.

Hopefully someone else can help you more.

Regards

This is going to sound stupid, but I have no clue how to make an image backup.

The closest thing I have to a repair CD is Vista SP1. I'm now using Vista SP2.

Because something went wrong with the system Microsoft sent me the SP1 repair disk.

I have always used System Restore if I had any issues. Now that I have no System Restore, I have nothing. Why doesn't the Restore work on the ASC????? The only reason I gave this software a shot was because your were supposed to be able to RESTORE if something went wrong.

I'm downloading the Macrium software right now, but I don't think it's going to do any good until I can resolve this problem and get things back the way they were.

Hi friend!! I run xp3, so I'm not much help. I doubt that this will help but it can't hurt. Can you tell the forum exactly what isn't working on your PC???

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212 PS If your only problem is missing icons on your quick launch, that's easily fixed. Screen shots would help also. Not being able to restore to an earlier time is a different story.===garybear

I did as sunny staines suggested and turned off my Norton, ran the restore again and all is good now.

I'm headed out now to pick up an external hard drive so I have someplace to back up too. Glad there are folks out there who help out.

I also wanted to let you know that the screen shots you provided were exactly what I was seeing.

Not for nothing, but how do idiots like me KNOW what is safe to remove and what should be stuck in the ignore file????:oops:

I have RegCure but it didn't find all the stuff that ASC found, but it also pretty much only removes empty registry keys. The Registry is no place for an amateur like me to be playing. At the same time I want my computer to run at peak performance. I read you thread about "backups", never read something more true:mrgreen: Won't make that mistake again. Boy there sure is a lot of stuff to learing to run a computer.

Hi friend!! Once you get you OS backed up with Macrium, you will feel more secure about your computer. The registry is no place to mess around, but I don't think anyone should be scared of it either. You shouldn't have a lot of registry entries to repair from now on. MRU and N/A entries are always safe to remove. I have learned almost every thing I know from members on this forum. This is the best place to learn about your PC. Lots of very smart people here. I learn some thing every day.==garybear PS I'm glad you got your problem solved.

Hi friends!!

Hi friends!! This is what ASC3 finds all the time. I have no clue what they are. I just let ASC3 repair them and I haven't had any problems that I know of.:roll::roll: PS Is there anyone that checks each one of these and knows what they are?? I seriously doubt it. There are over 140 entries here. I can understand why our members are concerned and a little reluctant to pull the trigger. Who would know which ones should be put in the ignore list?? Not me for damn sure; so I just pull the trigger knowing Macrium is always there for me. I'm hoping I get some comments on this post from friends that know about these things. I can only imagine what a member thinks that runs ASC3 the first time and has 800 or 900 errors(scary). I have suggested ASC3 to my friends and some have had 800 or 900 errors. I have them back up there OS with Macrium and pull the trigger. So far I haven't had anyone complaints. I keep my fingers crossed, knowing some day I will have a bad expirence, but I know Macrium will be there for me.===garybear PSS looking forward to some good comments on this post!!

Yep those are the kinds of things I saw too, only problem is I had about 900 to paw through and when I hit the trigger I ended up in the mess that my original post was about. I didn't have Macrium at that point so I was sort of up the creek without a paddle:oops:

I wish someone would make IDIOT PROOF software:mrgreen:

Hi friend!! I made this post with you in mind. I doubt if there are very many that will wade through 900 registry entries and know which ones to fix and which ones to put in the ignore list. This is MHO, It makes good cover to tell members to do that but maybe one member in a thousand will be able to sort out which ones to put in the ignore list. Everyone on this forum knows I tell it like I see it, and that's the way I see it. Just learn how to use Macrium my friend and your worries are just about over. ASC3 is a great program and you will be glad you have it, but Macrium will be the one that saves you some day. If I can be of any help, just holler my friend. I know a lot about Macrium. PS I hope one bad experience with ASC3 has not made you bitter. Welcome to the forum!!garybear PSS I have no proof, but I doubt if repairing the registry errors were the cause of your problem with the Quick Launch. It seems to me that undoing the registry repair would have fixed that if that's what caused the problem. I'm only speculating, and we may never know. I repair every registry error ASC3 shows and I have nothing in ignore list, but that's just me.

No it didn't sour me on the program, my skin is thicker than that. It just scared the crap out of me that I had no way to fix my mess. Like I said on other page; won't make that mistake again. Backed up and feeling fine:mrgreen:

Thanks for the welcome, I'll keep you in a footnote if I ever need help with Macrium

Hi friends

Hi friends!! If we had the ideal situation while using ASC3, we should be able to open the restore center and undue any changes that we have made to the registry. I really doubt that there is any one on this forum that will guarantee that will happen every time. So how do we decide which errors we will put in the ignore list?? I wish I had an answer. I have never had a problem by letting ASC3 clean all the errors, and I have had friends that have done the same and haven't had any known problems. My best advice is to always have your OS backed up with a program of your chose. My chose is Macrium Reflect. The first time you use ASC3, you probably will have a lot of registry errors, and if you know what every one of them are, then you are a genius my friend. A lot of errors are caused when you install and uninstall programs because there are always registry entries that are not removed when you do that. We all want our PC's to be clean and running at top speed, so we will just have to learn how to use these programs in our own way. I was hoping some members had some good advice about this subject. The registry is nothing to take lightly, but I don't think it should scare you to the point your are afraid to repair it and keep it clean either. These are my thoughts for what they are worth. Not worth much!! ===garybear

On the contrary, I doubt you made it to VIP status and not know something:wink:

I had another question, same subject.

I couldn't help notice that on you list back there, most of the entries have the word "currant user" and "users" in the front part. Should I assume that if it doesn't say "system" file in front then it would be ok to chuck it???

I have the feeling when I ran through the 900 I missed something attached to a system file and it shut down my ability to restore anything.

Hi new friend!! Don't let the title fool you. I have learned a lot from this forum, but there are many on this forum that don't have my fancy title and know a lot more than myself. I always chuck those kind of entries myself and don't know of any problems it has caused me. I run XP3 and so I hesitate to advice Vista users because they have different OS's, and everyone has different app's running, but I think your observation sounds very sound. I hope others will post and give some opinions on this subject as it is some thing every one is interested in. When my PC doesn't react the way I think it should; I always do a sfc /scannow and then a chkdsk first. Then I scan my OS with my AV and all three of my Malware programs. I have learned to fix minor problems that seem to pop up for no apparent reason. If none of the above seem to work, then I will restore to an earlier time with Windows. If that all fails, I turn to Macrium, which has never let me down. I wish I had better answers, but for now that's the best I can do. Maybe others will add their 2 cents.==garybear PS You might think about unticking the deep clean feature until you gain more confidence in the feature.PSS I have also noticed that these entries restore them selves and will show up next time you scan.
