Result = NO Space in Report.:!: Does that mean there is NOT enough space ?

 

How much space do I need to defrag a file ? 3x, 4x more then file size ?:?:

 

Should "always defrag" setting defrag a file with fragments? I would like to reduce the fragments # NO matter what the % is.

To start with it, you have to give verbose information of your OS, PC details and configuration

 

This comment made to you about a year ago is still valid. Also post the whole report please.

 

Screenshots of Smart Defrag GUI and settings will be helpful.

Why do large files NOT defrag and get a "NO Space" in Results ?:?:

 

Analyze say 45% Fragmented

OS = XP

PC = DELL D610

details and configuration = 1.5 G free space on 65 G HD

It seems that you don't have enough free space for the defragmentation to occur.

 

Since you are using XP, you have to have at least 15% free space of the total disk space.

 

If we can see your settings, we can also comment on why large files are not defragged. (Probably because of not enough free space too, or you have chosen a settings for large files not to be defragged.)

 

If you have an external drive, you can move some of the files there to have more than 15% free space in your HD and after defragmenting, you can move them back.

 

With 45% fragmentation your read and write operations of the PC must be really slowed down!:idea:

That seems extremely large.

 

What about defraging single files ? Should NOT the space required be dependent on the file ?:roll:

15% is the Windows XP rule.

 

You can defrag single file if the contiguous free space is enough for the size of the file to be defragmented.

The reason is that you don't have enough free space according to the size of your hard disk. The rule in XP is that, for defragmentation to start you have to have 15% free space in your hard drive.

 

To work around this limitation you can do the following that I have pointed out in post # 5:

 

"If you have an external drive, you can move some of the files there to have more than 15% free space in your HD and after defragmenting, you can move them back."

 

ie., give more than 15% of free space in your hard disk for a Defragmenting Software to defragment your files in the disk concerned.

 

In your case, even a flash drive with a size of 16GB will be enough to move about 16GB of your files (Not system files though) to the flash drive, defragment your 65 GB drive and then move the files in flash drive back to your 65 GB drive.

 

I suggest that you either have a larger drive, or have a second drive where you can keep your personal files to keep the original OS drive (where XP is installed) defragmented and running faster.
