Paranoid

I think in my effort to keep my computer up to date and safe, I've maybe gotten carried away a little too far. I did install Iobit as I had used in in the past and found it effective, but over a period of time I have come to rely on Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes as my prime source of protection. Somehow I've been advised to install others as well, namely, Kingsoft, Uniblue speed up my PC, PCHelper 360, and dll.files fixer. I feel that some of these are overlapping, and may actually conflict and are not necessary. For some reason 2 days ago my machine started to slow down and I discovered svchost.svc was hogging all of my CPU and causing everything to slow down. The next thing I noticed was several bits of audio in the background and I sent looking for a cure for that. I discovered something called TDSSKILLER, installed and everything cleared up, audio and CPU speed back to normal again. Now the question. Of the utilities that I have installed what should I keep and what can I throw away and equally important is there anything else you would recommend that I do install.

Thanks.

What Do I Use ??

Well Wjandy,

There is no difinitive answer.

It depends on a number of things

Mainly how Paranoid are you.

But as a rule of thumb

An antiVirus but only 1, (2 or more will be competing with each other).

An Antimalware (free or pro both tend to have realtime protection).

A decent Firewall

Depending upon which forum you post in you will get "Mines the best".

For an unbiased view goto Bleepingcomputers.com., (they have produced many of the antivirus clean-up tools used by Malware removal specialists).

The optional extras, what can i say I like Iobits the only other prog i use is malwarebytes, but only on demand.(see my profile)

you could also pop to the malware removal section of this forum and view one of the resolved threads and read SuperDaves SafeSufing comments

NOW REGARDING YOUR TDSSKILLER infection i would strongly advise you to

run Malwarebytes and Eset online scanner

It's just one thing I know, and my rule of thumb. Always have only 1 security software installed. Malwarebytes is an exception since it doesn't do realtime scanning. icon_smile.gif

I agree with this. IMO the best option is to pay for one of the mainstream security suites that include, Firewall, Antivirus, Identity protection, malware/spyware protection, etc.

If you want to scan off and on with Malwarebytes you can do that also.
