defrag wont run

I have a compaq loptop with a dual core pentium running windows vista. Works fine on my desktop running XP serv pac 2. Dosent do anything on my laptop beyond opening the defrag window. Is this a vista thing? Is there a patch?

jill-How much free space do you have on the drive?

Are you running on batteries? The standard setting is that laptops running on batteries should not perform a defrag.
