Hi Magic

In notepad you just choose that option in the bottom box, when you "Save As" :-)

Hey enoskype,

How do you upload/save it as UNICODE, I always wonder about that and never found an answer =(

Cheers.

haha Hi solbjerg,

Didn't know it was that easy, I thought you have to add some "codes" inside notepad... and I was searching around what Unicode codes do I put inside notepad XD

So by saving it as UNICODE, does that make computers that cannot read that language become readable?

Thank you for the info!

Hi Magic

Generally yes, but it is a complex question.

The one of yours that I checked was in unicode!

Almost all countries made their own codetables before unicode was implemented - often without thinking ahead or taking any other considerations.

Today we are moving closer and closer to using unicode as the standard for all countries.

Currently the standard unicode is utf 16 which means that it has room for 2^16 characters (65,536) there is still a bit of space left in the codetable but there is talk about extending it - perhaps even to utf 24 (16,777,216) or utf 32 (4,294,967,296).

In Chinese based machines the codetable doesn't necessarily have to use unicode but rely instead on a Chinese font, for other countries the easiest way is to use unicode codetable to handle the characters from around the world.

Codetables for fonts are usually utf 8 (256) earlier utf 7 (128 ) or even earlier base (utf 6) (64) that took care of the alphabet and other basic characters and commands.

Cheers

65,536 is also the maximum number of cells in an Excel sheet.

p.s. to read unicode one has to have a unicode font installed!

hi magic

Do you have double-byte fonts on your machine?

If so which ones?

Can you show character number 118784?

It is composed of the characters 55348 & 56320

I can get it to show an empty square in Excel by a function I made, but I can't see the sign, probably because I don't have a double-byte font!

Cheers

Hi Magic

No-no there's nothing wrong with your files. :-)

It was just that as you are Chinese I thought you knew about the Chinese system with double-byte and had some fonts for that.

Does everyone from Taiwan use Unicode fonts?

Just ignore me, I will try to find a solution elsewhere :-)

Hi solbjerg,

Ohohoh!!! I think i got it, something clipped into my mind

half-byte is like: "Like This =)"

full-byte is like: "Like This =)"

Am I right? =) hehe

We call it "full-byte" in Chinese, didn't know it's call "double-byte" in English.

and I think everyone from Taiwan uses Unicode fonts, not exactly sure what that means though.

Cheers.

Hi Magic

Looks as if you are right, I will try that double number(s) in PMingliu font

Edited: it should not be half-width or full-width form.

What I am looking for is double-byte fonts!

half-byte is like: "Like This =)"

34 76 105 107 101 32 84 104 105 115 32 61 41 34

full-byte is like: "Like This=)"

65282 65324 65353 65355 65349 12288 65332 65352 65353 65363 32 65309 65289 65282

If you write Alt+118784 do you then get a Character and not an empty space?

Actually it should be an old Greek notation for music :-)

Cheers

solbjerg

p.s. looks like the numbers are bona fide ascii numbers in the PMingliu font and not double-bytes. Could you try with some Chinese characters please.

Thanx enoskype =)

Hi solbjerg,

Sorry for the late reply, Exam period~

I do not get anything when I type Alt+118784, maybe I did it wrong haha

When typing double-byte in Chinese, the characters look the same for some reason. Except the question mark:

Single-byte: 妳好嗎?

Double-byte: 妳好嗎?

Cheers.

Hi solbjerg,

No 118784 is not in the unicode table, that is why I wondered if it was in the double-byte system.

When typing double-byte in Chinese, the characters look the same for some reason. Except the question mark:

They are the same usually, just a different number than the Unicode one.

Unicode has only one number for each sign, while doubly-byte use 2 numbers per sign 2425/1680 for example. (don't know if it exists or what it might look like) :-)

Single-byte: 妳好嗎? What you here call single byte is I suppose Unicode Alt+(22963 – 22909 – 21966 - 63)

Double-byte: 妳好嗎?Ok, so you have found out what double-byte is :-)

perhaps there are many kinds of questionmarks in Chinese?

Alt+( 22963 - 22909 - 21966 - 65311) (can only show the unicode signs by me, but you see that the double byte form has chosen another questionmark)

Cheers.

Cheers from me too :-)
