Possible Glitch in 1.40 Smart Defrag

KOR

Recommended Posts

New version worked great at first.

It is set on automatic defrag.

It loads up when I reboot and does it's job or did do its job until yesterday.

When I click on 'view report' or analyze it does NOT respond, does nothing.

I have to exit and bring the program up again manually and then I can do a defrag.

Anyone else having some glitches with 1.40?

Hi KOR,

I have had it lock up a few times myself. I closed it from the tray & re-opened it and it ran ok. Something does seem to be hanging it up occasionally. I suspect something in Auto Defrag, but not sure. It hasn't done it enough to track the problem down.

Checking in to see if there is any word on correcting the glitch in Smart Defrag.

It simply does not want to stay active on my computer.

I can do a manual defrag but I have to load it up and quickly do the defrag as it becomes totally docile within minutes.

Thanks.

SmartDefrag Ver 1.4 crashes the machine

This is a peculiar problem of the description below:

Machine IBM Thinkpad R51, 2 GB RAM

HTS424040M9AT00 50 GB IDE Harddisk, 2 partitions 25 GB each

Primary Red Hat Linux, Secondary Windows XP Pro SP3, 1.7611 GB free

The newly installed SmartDefrag Ver 1.4 crashes the machine on program startup. It doesn't even finish the disk map by simply selecting "Analyze".

I upgraded the BIOS (10 levels) from 1.19 to 1.29; it did not solve the problem and neither did the uninstall reinstall procedure.

I am a beta tester for a number of major developers with 35+years experience but am a little dumbfounded with this one. The system crash doesn't leave a trace or event log.

Please let me know what steps to take to get to the root of this problem; we all can benefit from the exercise I'm sure. Lets make it work.

Secondary Windows XP Pro SP3, 1.7611 GB free

Hi ashleyphall,

Should I understand 1.7611 GB free as 1761 MB free or 1.76 GB?.

Then both cases, it is much less than 15% of the total disk (7%).

If you can manage to free up space of about total 15% of 25GB (3.75 GB), and try, then we can discuss if there is a problem.

Also, you have to have Administrator rights for SD to work.

Cheers.

Hmm...

So at some point you had upgraded your RAM... but left the original hard disk in.

35 years... wow! 1975!! That was the year Texas Instruments released the first widely sold digital LED watch! Neither Apple, or Microsoft even existed!!! BASIC and Fortran!! IBM was king!! Big machines with reels of tape spinning around!!

If you cannot delete enough files to free the hard disk, perhaps you can eliminate some of the restore points to free enough space.

Or it may be time to do a back up and upgrade! (the hard drive at least)

Another SmartDefrag oddity

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes indeed, large reels of tape and big iron! Believe me when I tell you that the Quebec department of education were still swapping tapes in the early 90ties and it took me 5 years to convince them that there was a better way. Even today, they still do not understand the concept of a distributed database, and as far as network security is concerned they're a bunch of scared puppies!

On with the subject... SmartDefrag works fine on a Vista machine, the only thing is that when I dubble click on its icon in the status bar, the window that opens does not close nor minimize. You have to exit the program to make it disappear.

For the XP machine, I wonder if the crash is related to the fact that:

1. The Red Hat partition owns the first disk sector,

2. SmartDefrag cannot write the data map to RAM and the system crash is as a result of a stack overflow.

I will do a backup of every thing and restore on a larger disk. Lets see if this works.

About that swim; I rear from Newfoundland and at this time of the year, it is not recommended to dive without a helmet, unless you cut a hole in the ice first.

To Ashley... If you are offended by me placing this PM in open forum, please forgive!!

Hi All,

We are working on this issue. Our specialist Team and Testers have tested and investigated IObit Smart Defrag, but they failed to find out the cause now. But we will still trace this problem.

Thanks for all your understanding and support.

I need version 1.30 of Smart Defrag HELP...HELP

I am so frustrated with this new version of SD that I am about to go to another defrag application. I have tried everything to make it work and it won't. I can get it to defrag but I can't see the results which is unacceptable. I have been using SD since the beginning. It had been working perfectly for me. I used auto-defrag and my files never got more fragmented than .10 %. I was so satisfied with it's performance.

I would love to go back to version 1.30 if you could post it on the forum here. I made the mistake of deleting the installation program after downloading ver. 1.40. Just my luck. I have searched all over the INTERNET for version 1.30 but it is nowhere to be found. Please post 1.30 on the site here so I can stop pulling my hair out until there is a fix for ver. 1.40 :-(
