unable to defrag

Recommended Posts

I am unable to defrag my computer. When i try defrag only, fast optimize, or deep optimize it shows all the squares as black (immovable) but early (last week) it worked fine for me. Is there something wrong with my hard drive, or the program. I have version 1.11.

Hi nirav

Please check how much free space you have. (percent-wise)

Run a full chkdsk, and take a look at the report

Is the Windows defrag able to cope with it? dfrg.msc in Run

When we know this, - we will know a little more! :-)

Solbjerg,

I ran the chkdsk as you told me, i think that went fine, because when i came back windows was already loaded (is there a way to check the log of it?).

As for the windows defrag, I ran the analyze button and it worked fine, it displayed only a very small portion of unmovable data. Also it told me defrag was not needed. And I have 14% free space (10.5 GB)

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Smart Defrag, but didn't help, still see the black squares.

Hi nirav

If you go to administation - choose Log - click in left pane on programs? or whatever the name is on English based computers and find the post Logon - right click - choose properties and read what was done during the scan.

About defragging - looks like you have too little free space - the Windows defragger would tell you that too.

Try to find a way to create some more free space. Fx. move some programs to another disk, or try to use a little less space for Windows restore points, it is as default set to use 12% of the space, and 5% is usually more than enough.

Run a Clean up to clean out unnecessary files.

Should give you enough free space to run a defagmentation.

The path to chkdsk log in English based PC:

Administrative Tools or (Right click "My Computer" icon=>click "Manage" on the menu)=>Computer Management=>System Tools=>Event Viewer => (Windows Logs =>) Application => click on "Source" at the middle top to find "winlogon" ("wininit" in Vista) alphabetically, and click on it to view .

Cheers.

thanks enoskype!

Hi nirav

According to this scan

77931283 KB total disk space.

11210584 KB available on disk.

You have about 14.38% free space

Have you tried the Windows defragger dfrg.msc in Run

(it will probably tell you that there is insufficient space for a defrag)

Cheers

Hi Nirav,

It looks like you may need to do some house cleaning on your computer to free up additional space. Have you tried disk clean, ASC's disk clean? Checking for duplicate files with ASC's new Clone utility(careful here). Manually go through and check for programs and other files (maybe music, pictures) that you no longer need or use. Put files on an external hard drive if you have one. Anything to free up additional hdd space. Good luck!

Also unable to defrag

I am unable to defrag my computer. When i try defrag only, fast optimize, or deep optimize it shows all the squares as black (immovable) but early (last week) it worked fine for me. Is there something wrong with my hard drive, or the program. I have version 1.11.

I also have the same problem. I didn't have the problem with the older version. I downloaded the new version, uninstalled, and reinstalled. I don't think it is a problem with disk space.

I am using Advanced Window Care, well the updated version. I also have the freestanding Smart Defrag. Neither of them work. The scan goes well, until it gets to the defrag and then it seems to just sit there analyzing.

Hi sailor

It mostly looks like you have several files/programs running in the background during the defragmentation, and these files in use cannot be defragmented.

Try shutting them down temporarily, to be absolutely safe during this remove manually your connection to the internet while you run the defragmentation and afterwards connect it again and then activate the programs you shut down.

Cheers

solbjerg

I just recently installed Smart Defrag, but it does not seem to work. After running it, here is the report I get:

Why is this the program not defragging my files?
