Hi Neil101,

-There is nothing nasty in your PC, but since you are complaining about slowness, please fix some of the startup items which are unnecessary if you are rarely using the main programs of them.

Namely:

iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe

QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

- Update your Java from 1.6.0_10 to 1.6.0_18.

- After uninstalling the old versions of java, use JavaRa to get rid of the java clutter.

- As pyrath points out, use an Anti-Virus program.

- IObit's IObit Security 360 is a good program for anti-malware as a complementary to an A/V program, and there are very useful utilities in it.

Cheers.

I could provide screen shots to show you what i mean as i can't describe it well :)

Hi Neil101,

Run Startup Manager in Utilities of ASC, and uncheck those and Apply, so they will not start next time you start Windows.

You can use any other well known free A/V software.

Please provide screenshots so we can better understand what you mean.

Cheers.

Hi Neil101,

Here is info on Bonjour. Be sure to read it to decide if you want to remove or not:

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/6456/what-is-mdnsresponder.exe-bonjour-and-how-can-i-uninstall-or-remove-it/

It is very important to run ONE of each of antivirus & firewall.

Do I understand that your computer will not let you download these?

If you do not have any antivirus running, try downloading one from here:

http://www.filehippo.com/

AVG, Avira or Avast are good choices. You should also have a couple of good anti spyware programs. Give Iobit Security 360 a spin. Make sure you have a good firewall. If you don't have one PC tools firewall Plus is good. Do a search for it.

If you can't install anti virus you can try Trend Micro online virus scan, but it may take a while to run:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Please post back with progress

Hi again,

A nasty virus or an other malware may have blocked those sites in the HOSTS file.

It is found at:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\HOSTS

Open that file with Notepad and check if those addresses are there such as:

127.0.0.1 www. microsoft.com

and other addresses that you can not connect.

Please give feedback, so if it is like that, we can continue.

Cheers.

Hey, thankyou for the fast reply, in that folder there was 2 hosts files...

1 containing this...

#

# This file has been automatically generated for use by Microsoft Internet

# Connection Sharing. It contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names

# for the home network. Please do not make changes to the HOSTS.ICS file.

# Any changes may result in a loss of connectivity between machines on the

#192.168.0.1 PC1.mshome.net # 2014 11 0 9 23 19 24 359

and the other containing

Windows Update:

Launch Internet Explorer (not FireFox ) and paste the following address in the Address Bar. If a pop-up windows asks Do you want to allow this address to open a program on your computer (or something like that) say Yes.

This should take you straight to the Windows Update site.

Hi Neil ;

You do have an onboard firewall by nVidia , by the way, so let's make sure it's not acting up by disabling it :

Click on "Start" - "Run" and type (or copy/paste) the following line into the box then click "OK" :

services.msc

That will bring up a window with a list of Services on your machine. Locate this one :

ForceWare IP service

- Double-click on it ;

- In the box that opens, change the Start up type option to "Disabled" and click "OK".

- Exit your way out and restart your computer.

- Try those sites again.

If that didn't help, let us know and we'll figure out a way to get you an antivirus. Could you just try and see if this site works for you ? :

http://www.senduit.com/

If it loads, we can get you some tools, if needed.

I followed your insctructions and it was already set to Disabled, so i set it to automatic, then back to disabled to ensure of it, the problem still persists

Good :wink:

Please uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Control Panel - "Add/Remove Programs". Your version is outdated, so you'll need the newer one anyway. You can get a fresh version once you have a healthy connection back (or we'll figure out a way...). Restart the computer after the uninstall, if asked to do so.

Now let's get you an antivirus. You can try a few download sites first, to get Avira AntiVir (antivirus, free edition) :

http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?part=dl-10322935&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11012914

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/AntiVir-Personal-Edition-Download-6527.html

If those don't load for you, I have uploaded the free (english) installer for Avira AntiVir Personal Edition here :

http://senduit.com/3ef762

It is a rather large file (30MB), so it may take a few minutes.

Install the antivirus with default settings. It should update itself when the installation is complete and propose an immediate scan of your machine ; untick the option for the immediate scan, for now. If it doesn't update, just right-click on its icon next to your computer clock (the little umbrella) and choose Update. Once the update starts, you'll get a big popup window with information about their Premium version : you will get that every time the program gets an update and you can simply close it by clicking the "X" or by hitting the "Escape" key on your keyboard.

Once the update is complete, double-click on the icon next to the clock (umbrella) and launch a system scan. A report will show up onscreeen when completed : just copy/paste that report here.

*If the update cannot occur because of your connection problems, just run the scan anyway.

Good luck.

hey, i un-installed MalwareBytes, i then downloaded Avira AntiVirus thing through the cnet website, but when i install it i can't register or get updates for it, because all websites like that have been "blocked" and it just says i'm not connected to the internet, it has always been the case with every anti virus programme i have found, i download them from download.com then i install them fine, but can't register or get the updates as they get them from there site i guess, which it won't let me go on so it says theres no internet connection present =(

Posted

That's Ok Neil. You can manually update AntiVir by getting the update here :

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Signatures-Updates/Avira-Antivir-Virus-Definition-File-Update.shtml

If you read the text below, it tells you how to do it :

- Download the definitions file (it's a .zip file) and save it somewhere on your computer. No need to "unzip".

- Open AntiVir by double-clicking the icon ;

- Click on the "Update" menu up top ;

- Choose "Manual Update" ;

- Browse to where your file is and double-click on it ;

- The update will be done automatically

You can then launch a system scan.

If you could not get or install the update, just run a scan anyway.

Hi again Neil ;

I've just noticed a problem with the manual updater :

The file you download for updates could be named : ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip

There is a problem with that name and AntiVir may not recognize it. The workaround is simple ; just rename the file to this :

vdf_fusebundle.zip

... and AntiVir will now see it.

If you can't see the ".zip" at the end of the file name, that's not a problem, but then make sure you rename it to :

vdf_fusebundle

(if you can't see ".zip" on the file you downloaded, don't add ".zip" when you rename the file).

Good luck.

That's Ok Neil. You can manually update AntiVir by getting the update here :

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Signatures-Updates/Avira-Antivir-Virus-Definition-File-Update.shtml

If you read the text below, it tells you how to do it :

- Download the definitions file (it's a .zip file) and save it somewhere on your computer. No need to "unzip".

- Open AntiVir by double-clicking the icon ;

- Click on the "Update" menu up top ;

- Choose "Manual Update" ;

- Browse to where your file is and double-click on it ;

- The update will be done automatically

You can then launch a system scan.

If you could not get or install the update, just run a scan anyway.
