Laptop freezes then resumes-HELP

SirRadget

Recommended Posts

I have a pretty old laptop, but everything was working fine for the longest times. I had Windows 8 on it, but due to these lag issues(For some reason it didn't recognize 2 gigs of my ram.)

So I switched back to Windows 7, and it does see it now.

Though once I did that, I've been getting these issues of my laptop just freezing. Though the freeze can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 3 minutes. Then it just resumes. It just stops everything, no sound, no nothing. It even disconnects me from the internet.

Though sometimes when this happens I can see my mouse cursor switch to something like it's trying to load something(Not quite sure).

I've searched so many places to see if there is a fix. I can not find anything.

Someone said it's a registry issue, I've tried Ccleaner, then Advaned System Care 7. NOTHING.

Someone said you need to reformat your Hard Drive. Did and NOTHING.

I was told you update your drives, I downloaded AMD Catalyst Control Center in order to, and NOTHING.

Someone said it was a Root Malware, I downloaded a program called TDSSKiller. It found about 8 problems, restarted. THOUGH IT STILL FREEZES THEN RESUMES.

I am getting very annoyed, this only happened one I put Windows 7 back on.

This mainly happens when I am watching a video. netflix/youtube.

I am in really need of help with this, if there is something I can do I will.

I have used most of Iobits Products to see if theres an issue, Driver Booster, Smart Defrag, Malware Removal, Advanced System Care.(All latests versions)

Though it still happens and I am getting very annoyed.

System Specs:

Processor - AMD Athlon II Dual-Core M300 2.00 GHz

RAM - 4.00 GB (3.75 GB usable)

Video Card - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series

Someone please help, I literally can not find any solution to this online. People have told me to do so many things but they're not working.

Hi SirRadget

Welcome to the forum. It sounds to me like the issue was caused by W8. Even though you reinstalled W7, it is possible that W8 reconfigured something possibly in the Bios.

It is important to try to determine whether the issue is OS, Installed Programs or Hardware.

I suggest that you disable all programs in your startup manager. Then only load programs manually as you need them. See if this resolves the issue.

You should also open your Task Manager (ctrl-Alt-Esc). Watch your Task manager to see if your CPU goes to maximum (100%) which could cause a freeze. Also watch your RAM to see if it is maxing out, which could also cause a freeze.

The fact that W8 did not see 2Gb of your ram leads me to suspect that the issue may be RAM related.

I am sure its not a program on my laptop that is causing this issue. I have tested this too, I don't see any issue.

It was all working fine too when I put windows 8 on. Few months later I got lag issues, with games and videos. Including going on websites(Pages were skippy when I tried to scroll down or up).

Then I put Windows 7 back on, I don't have any lag issues. It's just the random freezes. This doesn't seem to happen during a game either. It mainly happens when I'm on youtube/netflix/gogoanime

It's pretty annoying. Because it doesn't even resume from its current position. It like keeps playing, but no sound of video is happening for me.

I've been trying to figure out what is the problem. I can not find out what is causing this issue. I have 4gigs of ram, I can literally be watching a video and it will just freeze. I have tried different browsers as well, Chrome, Opera, Firefox. And more.

Hi SirRadget,

Have you tried ( chkdsk /f )?

Right click on the DOS Command Prompt in Accessories and run as Admin. Type chkdsk /f (f switch is to auto fix any errors). You'll be asked if you want to run on restart. Type Y to accept and restart your machine. chkdsk will run upon restart and will try to fix any errors.

See if this helps.

I would also try SFC /Scannow for couple of times.

You can find the tutorial about it @ SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please report back the results.

Cheers.

I have already done chkdsk before.(Yesterday)

I ran the system file checker and everything came out good.

I just ran memtest86+, and everything came out good.

I am unsure of what the problem is. If there is anything I can do please tell me, this situation(freezing then resumes) is really getting annoying.

As I said previously, You need to have your task manager running when you are watching a video and or watching youtube and see if your CPU or Memory are making out when the freeze is happening.

If it is not the CPU or Memory, then it is quite possibly a hardware issue with your video card. Can you run a diagnostic on your video card. There is normally a diagnostic facility on a laptop.

Hi again SirRadget,

After completing Scannan's suggestions, if it is still the same, please follow the route below.

Referring back to your first post, I would suggest you to post a tread starter asking for help for probable malware in Spyware-Malware Removal Help! section. There might be need for software other than TDSSKiller to find out if there is anything unwaanted in your laptop.

Please follow the procedure in Guidelines for requesting malware removal assistance thread there and then follow the instructions of Malware Fighter SuperDave when he responds.

During the time of communication with SuperDave, please do not post anything else in the other sections of the forum about the same subject.

Only Malware Fighters and Forum Leaders can reply you there.

Cheers.

Hi Guys,

Just want to drop in, since we're spitball'in the problem. Everything I've read in the posts seems to indicate that this problem is happening only when Radget is online. Attempting to watch videos, browsing, netflix or playing on line games (reference to Hi-Rez Studios). I would bet this is strong indicator that his NIC or on board Lan is causing the problems. It's just a thought as there seems to be no other problems when running the computer.

I've ran so many tests, I can not figure out what is wrong. And I am unsure of this Hi-Rez stuidio thing Atailor1.

My laptop just froze twice in a row. Each freeze lasting a good minute, while they were only 10 seconds apart from each other.

I was only in a skype call, literally doing nothing else.

I've also noticed this Warning it gave me in the system logs. This was about an hour ago.

The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_MOTOROLA&PROD_MB810&REV_0001#016061AA1200E010&0#.

-Well this happened while I was typing this reply.

The Windows Error Reporting Service service entered the running state.

A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Windows Error Reporting Service service to connect.

I closed out of skype and it happened again.

-The Windows Error Reporting Service service entered the stopped state.

-The Application Experience service entered the stopped state.

-The Windows Error Reporting Service service entered the running state

-The Steam Client Service service entered the stopped state.

-The Windows Error Reporting Service service entered the stopped state.

STEAM ISNT EVEN OPEN!

-The speed of processor 1 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report.

I've done so much testing, I seriously need a solution.

I decided to use Iobit SysExplorer to get a diagnostic.

Not sure if this will help but here are the results.

Now it's just freezing every minute without anything open. This freeze only lasts for a short period like 10 - 20 seconds.

Plus it is not giving me any errors in the windows logs. It's like nothing happened.

I saw something popup on the top of my screen when it resumed. But I didnt not get to see what it was because it was only there for a split second.

Radget,

My comment regarding Hi Rez, was to the effect that from what I understand you are playing on line (internet connection). In your post from yesterday, you said you were on a Skype call nothing else, (again internet connection). Does the system lockup when you run any other programs, not requiring you to be online? For example running a Malwarebytes scan. If the answer is no, then I still think something is wrong with your network connection, but we are troubleshooting in a forum enviroment, so who knows.

Yes it has locked up once, I had a dvd of Star Trek(2).

I was just watching that at the time and it froze about 3 times during.

Though Skype was signed in at the time as was Steam.

If there is a way I can fix this please tell me.

I tried reinstalling google chrome and now it wont even open.

Hi Radget,

Glad you got the problem resolved, even if you had to go so far as to reinstall Windows 8. Better to have than be without. Even though I could be wrong, I still think that something went wrong with your internet connection, (probably the driver for your wireless network adapter) which reinstalling Windows 8 sorted out.

Again, glad your back up and running.

Simply means your computer is getting overworked most likely. This could be due to it simply having outdated hardware, or maybe you need to clear your browsers cache / virus, malware scan. Also try using a cleanup tool to get rid of a lot of the useless data on your HDD.
