Registry-Size in Report.exe ?

Toppack

Recommended Posts

I'm starting to think the Report.exe program, that comes with ASC-5,

is Not very accurate, in measureing Registry size.

Yesterday it was 126.MB, then it went down to 106.MB.

Today it's back to exactly 126.MB again.

It seems to me that the odds of it being Exactly the Same size are very Slim. :???:

I made a shortcut for it,

so I'll keep checking it before and after doing deep-scan,

to see if there is any change.

Hi Toppack

I have about 12,5% of your registry size (OS Windows XP sp.3)

So to me it sounds enormous, but perhaps it is standard for OS Windows 7?

The differences you experience are probably normal - many cleaned out insertions will be created again in the registry when used, I think.

Well, the reported Registry size can Not be accurate.

It stays at 126.MB.

Thanks for the Info.

I do have a LOT of Software programs installed on this compurter,

which probably accounts for most of the Large size,

I just don't know what to believe, right now ???

Do you know of any software for monitoring the Registry size?

There are Many Registry Cleaners and Defragers,

but I've not been able to find another small Size-monitor program,

for comparison. :-(

Hi Toppack

As you know I cannot answer question specifically concerning Win 7 or

64 bit setup, as I use Win XP sp.3 and 32 bit setup.

But perhaps it isn't too different - by me I can take a look at this address:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config - by you it might be

C:\Windows\system64\config

There you can find several folders and files and view their sizes.

What gets reported as the registry size probably depends on some specifically chosen folders and files in this config-library (chosen according to the preference of the reporting utility I guess) - perhaps also depending on the OS used.

By comparing the reported 126 Mb by you to the folder/files in your config it should be possible to guess at which folders and files is chosen by the reporting facility by you.

This is about as far as my logic goes :-)

p.s. each user profile, in a file called NTUser.dat

Hi guys,

I am not sure if it works for 64x systems, but you can install and use dureg_setup.exe (MS) with the command dureg with /a switch in an elevated command prompt at the same installation folder. (C:\Program Files\Resource Kit\dureg.xe)

Other switches for individual sections are:

C:\Program Files\Resource Kit>dureg /a ENTER

It will reveal the sizes of:

-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT :

-HKEY_USERS :

-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE :

-Total Registry data size :

lm > HKLM

cu > HKCU

u > HKU

Please note that, the sizes will be data sizes not including the lost spaces w/wo fragmentation. (Should be smaller than what Staus of ASC5 or Performance Monitor of ASC4 reveals.)

Dureg.exe is compatible with 2000, XP, Vista, and 7.

Cheers.

When I try to run dureg.exe, as Admin also,

I see it flash on screen, but it does not continue to run. :???:

I've tried running it several different ways, but with same result. :-(

(even in XP and Server-compatibility modes)

Is it because I'm using W-7 64bit?

By running dureg /a from within cmd.exe,

I got it to display two 8-digit numbers before disappearing.

By repeatedly running it, I was able to determine the reported info was:

(only these 2 lines were displayed)

Hkey_Classes_ Root 26013225

Hkey_Users 17071935

I'm not sure what those numbers mean but they certainly don't add up to 126.MB. ;-)

I assume the size numbers are in bits, not bytes,

but since the Hkey_Local_machine number is not displayed, I can not get Total.

Those two alone only add up to about 5.4 MBytes, when converted.

I found that if I used the /cr, /cu and /lm switches, instead /a,

(which displays each one individually)

I could get all 3 numbers without them disappearing.

By adding the 3 together and dividing by 8,

the Total is 10.6 MBytes.

So I'm still no closer to determining where 126.MBytes came from ???

I wonder if that should really be 12.6MB, instead of 126.???,

which would be closer I think.

I found that there is a 4th catagory:

Hkey_Current_User

And with all four added and divided the total is 12.7 MB

*So, I think I've found the problem with Report.exe:

It should be around 10. to 15.MB,

Not 100. to 150.MB

The decimal-point is in Wrong place.

And the reason a change is not seen often, is that the 4 sections are Averaged together,

so a large change in more one catagory is needed, for it to change the overall total number,

which is okay.

So, Report.exe (Status button) is Not a Good way to monitor how much the Registry-fix utility is changing Registry size.

I think the numbers reported by Dureg.exe are in (bits), Not (bytes)?

So need to be divided by 8.

If that is Not true then nothing works out even Close to the 126.MB or 12.6MB.

Any way you look at it though, the 126.MB Can Not be Accurate.

So, I'm still looking for a way to monitor Registry size,

if anyone knows of such a Thing.

Seeing is believing!

The size of the Registry data is shown in terms of bytes.

OK Toppack, seeing is believing.

Please have a look at THIS page.

You are underestimating the gaps, unused blocks, spaces, fragmentation in the Registry.

Quote from: C:\Program Files\Resource Kit\dureg_d.htm

DuReg counts data, not space. Because the space any data occupies varies with the storage method and amount of free space available, the size of data and the size of space consumed are not equal. Also, because it measures data, DuReg does not account for fragmented free space in the registry.

Cheers and out.

Thanks for the Info link.

I wish I knew how to write a .exe program, using dureg data.

Very Frustrating! :-x

If I could just get a Good indication of how much the Data size changes,

I think that would be a good indication of size changed by Registry-fix and Registry-Defrag programs.

Today the dureg program, with the /a switch, is running Normally.

Don't know what happened yesterday, when it was disappearing on completion.

I copied dureg.exe to c:\

Being there makes running dureg easier, from within CMD (command prompt).

So, with that fix and change, getting Total Registry size is Not too big of a problem, using dureg.exe.

It would be great if Report.exe gave the correct size,

but I can live with using dureg /a, until I find something better.

BTW - the Registry size on this computer is about 91.MB

Thanks for the help Enoskype

  • 4 weeks later...

Here you can find several folders and files, check its size. Been reported to the registry size may depend on the choice of some special folders and files in this configuration library (I guess reporting tools preferred choice) -Gadgets may also depend on the operating system.

If you are using TweakNow Registry cleaner it will show you the size of the Registry Hives. You have to add them up to get the total

On my two Dell 570MT W7 SP1 x64 computers the registry sizes are shown as

94,389 and 98,976

ASC 5 Beta 2.1 is showing

122,00 and 131,000

Hello,

Thanks for the Info.

I assume that is really 94.MB and 98.MB, correct? (94.KB & 98.KB would be way too small)

Have you compaired the size numbers reported by TweakNow,

to those reported by dureg.exe /a ?

On the computer that TweakNow was showing 94.4MB Dureg is showing 84.5

On the computer that TweakNow was showing 99.0MB Dureg is showing 91.2

Erunt

Hello Toppack! I don't know how accurate ERUNT is, but this is what it's backing up in W7 Premium for me. I would have to assume it's as close as your going to get on registry size sense that's what it will restore back to your OS.
