Smart Defrag v 2.6 Final problem

Bubba Euler

Recommended Posts

Back on September 26th, I posted concerning a few quirks in Smart Defrag 2.5. I now have version 2.6 (Final) and have accomplished a clean install and using ASC 5 Pro to clear the register of residue from the older install. I even installed the version 2.6 (Final) in a different location on the drive, rather than in the IOBit file in Program Files (x86)!

Smart Defrag still shows the history of all the defrags since back in August. It STILL shuts down, on its own, without warning.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with Smart Defrag? It will be, both, amusing and fulfilling to finally solve the mystery.

Thanks.

Bubba Euler

Hi Bubba Euler.

To have a truly clean install of the Iobit product you refer to you must also delete the original file that contained the original download (even if it appears to be empty and you have downloaded/installed to a different location).

Please see this post.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

-Mel

It STILL shuts down, on its own, without warning.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with Smart Defrag?

What exactly do you mean by "shuts down"?

At what point in the procedure does it stop?

Does it lockup with the GUI still on the screen?

Or does it completely stop running and disappear from the screen?

Edit - I just read part of your original post and saw that you are running SD at Boot-up,

Which I think is Not a good idea, since it can cause delay-conflects with processes and services, that are also being loaded at boot-up!

(depending on what is being loaded)

Did you try running SD Manually to see if that made a difference?

If you boot-up the computer every day, then running SD daily, at boot-up, is Excessive and not necessary.

Answers to your additional questions

What exactly do you mean by "shuts down"?

Automatic Defrag is set True; The Program starts at boot-up. It will, when necessary, perform an Auto-Defrag and will finish that procedure. The problem is this: I have seen the task bar Icon disappear while it was doing nothing! I have to manually re-start the program.

At what point in the procedure does it stop?

It does not, that I have seen, stop during a procedure!!

Does it lockup with the GUI still on the screen?

No! Never has...

Or does it completely stop running and disappear from the screen?

It has never stopped while I have Manually started the program. It finishes and remains in the task bar area.

So you are saying that SD does Not 'shut-down' while running?

It's just the Icon on the Task-bar that disappears?

Does the Icon disappear only during the boot-up procedure or at other times?

Maybe you need to 'Pin' the Icon to task-bar? That way it will there when you need it.

(To do that, right-click on the Icon and click 'Pin to taskbar' selection)

:shock:Sorry, you just said that it does Not stop during the defrag procedure,

Now you say it Does stop.

Which is it ???

The icon not being on the task-bar Is Not the same thing as the program stopped running.

Automatic-Defrag 'at a scheduled time', does not keep SD loaded in memory, but is loaded at that time, if that is where the confusion is?

Aye.

Bubba Euler's very limited self described system:

OS + Computer Details:Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1; Avira A/V; ASC 5 Pro; OIBit Malware Fighter; Smart RAM; IOBit ToolBox; Windows Firewall;

I agree with scrd01. The problem is isolated (previously unreported), a clean install was not the solution... this is what it looks like in Vista:

Hi

I think it would be good to know whether this computer runs on batteries

Likewise screenshots of the program settings would be good.

Additionally the settings for the system tray would be good to know - fx. is the setting "Hide inactive icons" activated.

Cheers

Hi bongobill52,

We are wondering whether you have set SD icon to be hidden in the system tray. To view the hidden icons, please click the triangle icon in the system tray. Here is a screenshot for your reference.

If there is no SD icon, please check whether SmartDefrag.exe is running in the Processes.

Thanks in advance.

thanks for response, the " smart defrag" icon setting is set to "always show", and as my system utilizes dual monitors, I have task manager always open and showing on one of the monitors. When Smart defrag decides to shut down on its own, the icon is gone and it's process no longer shows in task manager.

Hi bongobill

What are your settings? fx. Pause auto defrag if usage of resources exceeds ?% ?

Cheers

Hi bongobill

Comparison: But my OS is XP

I have removed almost all the records of your 294 autodefrags to compare more easily :-)

The only thing that I see as really different is:

EnableCpuLimit=0 in mine and EnableCpuLimit=1 in yours

I wonder if that could do it?

If it is and you do not want to untick that option you could try raising the limit to 80%

Unfortunately the columns didn't survives the sending, so I deleted them

I could send the Excel file attached if you want. (have done so)
